Obama campaign: Consumers dont blame the president for gas prices
By Ben Geman - 03/02/12 10:26 AM ET
A top official with President Obamas reelection campaign expressed confidence Friday that consumers wont punish Obama politically for rising gas prices and touted significant accomplishments on energy, including tougher auto mileage rules.
They dont blame the president. They understand whats going on with the global marketplace, said Stephanie Cutter, the presidents deputy campaign manager, on MSNBC. But they also acknowledge that we have to do everything we can to make sure that America is independent and not tied to foreign oil and they appreciate what the president has done.
Republicans on Capitol Hill and on the campaign trail have increasingly attacked the White House over gasoline prices amid the recent run-up. Obamas energy record was already under fire over the bankruptcy of the Energy Department-backed solar company Solyndra.
The White House has moved to rebut attacks on both fronts, an effort that includes a pair of energy-themed speeches over the last week. The Obama campaign used its first advertisement in January to tout the president's overall energy record and to parry attacks over Solyndra from the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.
We chose to respond because we are not going to sit back and let these untruths be said about the president, Cutter said Friday. The president is proud, we are proud of the presidents record on clean energy and on ensuring all options are on the table, an all-of-the-above approach is being taken to ensure that Americans are not dependent on foreign oil.
We are seeing right now the volatility that comes with being dependent on foreign oil, and we have got some significant accomplishments under our belt, doubling fuel efficiency standards, having the lowest dependency on foreign oil in 16 years, the highest production in eight years these are real facts, she added.
Republicans in Congress and on the stump say the White House is keeping too many areas off-limits to drilling, including the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, and want faster permitting for drillers on public lands and in Gulf of Mexico areas where development is already authorized.
They have also taken aim at Obamas rejection of a cross-border permit for the Keystone XL pipeline that would bring Canadian oil sands to Gulf Coast refineries.
Gasoline has increasingly become the stuff of election-year battles even though policymakers have few options, especially in the near term, to substantially affect prices at the pump, which are tethered to crude oil prices set on global markets.
A new Pew Research Center-Washington Post poll shows that 18 percent of adults surveyed say President Obama is most to blame for rising gasoline costs. The poll generally showed that the public spreads blame among a number of parties and causes.
Regular gasoline prices are now averaging $3.74 per gallon nationwide and have surged above $4 in some areas, according to AAA.
I'm picking up a theme here - NOTHING is Hussein's fault nor can ANYTHING be Hussein's fault. Am I close?
I do.
Put an “R” next to Obama’s name and I bet the Dems would have demanded he resign for these gas prices..but hey it’s Obama..he can get away with anything
I support President Obama’s 999 plan. /s
Gas at $9.99 a gallon.
Such a deal.
You mean those 49.5% that don’t pay income tax also don’t pay for gas?
Ha ha ha ha ha. When Bush was in office the MSM and Dems (is there really a difference) blamed him for high has prices, but BHO who has done everything to restrict access to oil is not at fault at all.
Wrong! We blame him every chance we get. It is his fault entirely!
People dont blame him but the same people also enjoyed dinner with Elvis last night
Oh, I so hope Obambi and his idiot groupies believe this, and stay the status quo...
You’ve got it. Dear Leader can do no wrong. It’s not in his nature to make a mistake.
Gas could be $10.00/gallon and bread $20 a loaf, and the media will salivate over this guy. Tingles up and down the leg. Greatest president ever.

“touted significant accomplishments on energy”
i.e. Solyndra.
Does she have any basis for this assertion, or is this just a combination of delusion and denial?
(Noting that Zero's energy secretary said this week that rising gas prices were a good thing, perhaps she means that she thinks voters will credit the Obama administration for high gas prices?)
I’m getting really annoyed with this administration constantly telling me what I think and how I feel.
“A new Pew Research Center-Washington Post poll shows that 18 percent of adults surveyed say President Obama is most to blame for rising gasoline costs.”
Pew is a vile propaganda machine for leftists and the rat party. It always has been. Believe nothing these Nazis say. Here’s the story -

I’m a consumer and I blame Obama.
When Bush was in office, rising gas prices meant that "Bush and Cheney are helping their friends in the oil business."
Falling gas prices meant "Big Oil is keeping prices low to help Bush and Cheney get re-elected."
Next time when one fills up, we should all stick a picture of a grinning Obama to the pump. Pass it on!
Of course, just look at Chavez in Venezuala. Obama and the press are exactly the same.
Whenever some bass-ackwards policy goes disastrously wrong, it isn’t their G-d made flesh that failed, it was the vile business sabatours that caused the glorious workers to miss their 5-year production quotas.
Power to the People, baby! Viva la revalucion! (end sarc)
Yes we do.
