The United States announced a diplomatic breakthrough with North Korea Wednesday.
Under an agreement reached in direct talks in Beijing last week, North Korea has agreed to allow the return of nuclear inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, and has agreed to implement a moratorium on long-range missile tests, nuclear tests, and nuclear activities at Yongbyon, including uranium enrichment activities, the State Department said. In return, the United States will provide North Korea with a large food aid package.

Some FReeper help me out here please. Refresh my memory. What, again, is that definition of stupidity?
I heard the Hildabeaste on the radio raving about this late today. To hear her, you’d think this was the greatest, most amazing diplomatic breakthrough the world has ever seen.

We’re gonna give them a bunch of food and they’re gonna continue to hide their nukes. I hear a familiar song playing in the background.

Will the DPRK show inspectors everything? In the 1960s Dimona was inspected by the United States seven times and nothing was found. Why? The Israelis built a fake control rooms and built walls to conceal the plutonium factory.

This is one of those diplomatic ventures that falls under the rubric of possibly much to gain and not much to lose.
We have a new leader in North Korea. Might as well encourage him not to make nuclear weapons. A small price to pay if we gamble and lose, but an enormous win if we keep the North Koreans from further nuclear weapons development.

NOT SO FAST. STOP THE PRESSES. THE JAPANESE PRESS IS REPORTING THE DEAL HAS FALLEN THROUGH, DUE TO DIFFERING INTERPRETATIONS FROM THE NORTH KOREAN DELEGATE SIDE AND THE (DESPERATE FOR AN ELECTION YEAR "VICTORY") US SIDE. NO SOONER HAD THE INK DRIED, THAN THE DIFFERENCE IN DEFINITIONS EMERGE. Breaking, just a few ago on Japanese news here, under analysis section. (They are the least fooled about what a "deal" with North Korea means.http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20120301-00000012-jij-int

3:00 am phone call ...
0bama: [ring ring ring] "hello?"
Hillary: "Sorry to bother you"
0bama: "oh no problem, I was awake"
Hillary: "worried about this North Korean deal?"
0bama: "no, Michele's finishing off a plate of ribs"
Hillary: "at 3:00 AM?!?"
0bama: "hey, you have your crisis, she's got hers"
Hillary: "omg...well we have a problem"
0bama: "well, ok. 'sup?"
Hillary: "the Japanese media is reporting that the agreement with North Korea is already down the tubes"
0bama: "how many Americans know Japanese?"
Hillary: "hell, I dunno, but probably not very many"
0bama: "so no problem, what your fellow ignorant Americans don't know won't bother them"
Hillary: "is that your answer?"
0bama: "either that or we send Michele to Pyongyang to start wolfing down some of Kim Jong Un's elaborate buffet and salad bars"
Hillary: "oh HELL no, you want to start a war?"

Well stated.
And why is it that the state-run media always trumpets these “breakthroughs” as sound, brilliant foreign policy...when they are obtained under DemocRats, but ridicule them and point out how many times in the past such agreements were broken when they are obtained under Republicans?
Of course, that is a rhetorical question.
