Relentless scrutiny pushed Palin to exasperation
AP ^ | February 24, 2012 | BECKY BOHRER and MIKE BAKER

Just a few months after returning from the presidential campaign trail, a weary Sarah Palin shot off a 1 a.m. email to top colleagues in her office.

Buried in ethics complaints that she deemed frivolous, the Alaska governor was feeling increasingly detached from her family. She faced mounting legal bills that only exacerbated the financial turmoil related to her family's travel.

"I'm just beat down on this one. I am tired. The opponents have succeeded on the drive towards our personal bankruptcy, and have divided my family," she wrote.

She finished the overnight email with a sobering conclusion: "One has to be single, wealthy, or corrupt to function in this political system."

(snip)

"I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. I'm condemned and scrutinized for not being here enough," she wrote.

The governor said she paid out of pocket to repay travel by her family, which was "based on bogus accusations that I traveled too much in the past," and said she paid back taxes for not being in the governor's mansion "enough" during renovations.

"This Juneau situation cost Todd and me about $35,000 recently. The double standard applied to me and my spouse keeps me from freely traveling as other govs did," she wrote.

The title is all wrong. I don't think Sarah minds the "scrutiny" very much. It is the massive personal attacks and financial attacks, that she could not stand against. Mind you, she was standing alone against these attacks. The Republican party did nothing to help her. They were hoping she just went away. All those who followed the Palin threads on this forum can remember the type of concerted efforts against her, even from those who were supposedly on her side.

No politician in history has been forced to endure what she has endured. I can’t wait to launch on the next so-called patriot with PDS here. Why people can’t see what’s going on is a mystery. Palin is hated because she is the only real threat out there. We as conservatives should have done more to help her. America certainly does not deserve S. Palin.

The icing on the cake was the Giffords shooting.

The establishment (even those she helped into office....Gov. Haley, Bachmann, etc.,) didn’t lift a finger to help or even publicly show support.

That is precisely why CC gets my eternal wrath via my tagline. While appearing on some late night disaster the host asked him about S. Palin and he rolled his eyes. CC is a cipher, and will be forgotten. S. Palin is an exclamation point. Need I say more?

I never understood the hate that these people had for President Reagan, Sarah and Newt. These haters have a lost soul is the only way to explain this.

That’s me, as well. My whole entire perspective towards the GOP has been completely and negatively turned on its head these past three years, almost entirely due to the Party’s sheer disinterest and/or cowardice in its unwillingness to support one of their own.... someone who fought strongly for them again and again, but received absolutely ZERO support when targeted for political and personal obliteration. Not a single finger was lifted to help. Not when Palin’s church was burned, when there was a coordinated effort to bankrupt her, when her family was dragged through the tabloid mud, nor when the media tried to claim she was complicit in the Tucson mass-murder.

For decades I’ve voted exclusively GOP, and would view the convention every four years on television, since the days of Reagan. Now the mere thought of watching this year’s upcoming Republican convention makes me almost sick to my stomach to even contemplate.

I don't know how old you are, but if you are my age, you will recall the attacks on Richard Nixon and his family. They were beyond the pale (pail?) What happened to Sarah Palin is very like that, and I shudder to think what might have happened to her and her family, had she been elected VP. In fact, I fear what will happen to any GOP president if elected (except Romney who isn't really a republican.)

Can you or anyone really articulate what Watergate was actually about? It was all media driven to destroy a popular republican president who won reelection by a landslide, and, truth is, there really is no “there” there.

****And the attacks were all coordinated by Pete Rouse and David Axelrod working next door to the Oval Office, funded by the DNC, and carried out by local Rats in Alaska.****

The thing is they thought they had "finished off" Palin when she resigned but it actually was a brilliant move. The "ethical" complaints were defunding the Palin family and she was right to do what she did. Now they want to mock her for making money (Yes lefties thats what happens when you sell 4 million plus books). As far as I'm concerned I hope she makes lots of money and rubs it in the face of every left wing rat she runs into.

Palin was pushed out of office by a few leftist pricks. It could happen to anybody. It could happen to you.

Nobody in the history of the USA (or humanity) has been subjected to such witch hunting as Gov Palin, soon to be President Palin

no. they thought she would do the conventional thing and continue to be battered personally and as Governor until she became “not viable” as a national candidate.

Then she resigned and threw their whole game awry. She went on to be a driving force in an historic election and continues to be the leader of the “Tea Party” faction of her party.

Fact is if Sarah Palin declared for the nomination tomorrow she would be the leader in all the polls within a few days.

It was the lack of support from the current GOP leadership that kept her from running. For now.

Kind of amazing the "AP -- American Pravda" would even print this.

It just sums up what we knew back then. When the left wing smog machine goes after someone, they really don't give a damn about body count and the MSM repeats every lie they tell. They are totally vicious and the truth means absolutely nothing to them.

God bless Sarah. I don't know if she would have been good or not, but she couldn't have been any worse than that career dolt/gaff machine from Delaware that we have now.

Great post! Very well said! I still can’t believe some FReepers drill her every chance they get. With the women, I think it is a part jealousy thing. She is super intelligent, confident, fearless, gorgeous, (even after 5 or 6 kids, looking at 50, she could shame a lot of college cheer gals in the bod and face department, and that’s gotta frost ‘em), married to a 100% man’s man and has what seems like a great family. Why the guys fang her? I have no idea. She is the best conservative voice out there, bar none. I pray somehow, someway she gets back into the mix. Your 5% is to high by the way....1% is more like it.

We can HELP Palin in getting her 2 pounds of flesh by NOT sending the GOP any money. I just got a request from College Young Republicans. My reply is not going to be PC - not blaming them but warning them about the RNC, etc.

No money - nada cent; zilch lettuce; No Green.

And tell the RNC and their campaign committees that this is the way it is going to be.

Another irony that always gets me is that for years and years, the media was always promoting this grand notion of some kind of ‘ideal’ politician who would come about and bring bi-partisan concensus and be clean and unencumbered by outside interests, and such. They’d always be harping on this kind of ‘ideal’ politician.

So, here comes someone who had solid bi-partisan legislative success in her state, fought staunchly against corruption (even in her own party), championed transparency, stood up to the liberal bugaboo of “Big Oil,” and was truly independent by not being under the thumb of special interests, Party machines, corporate or union interests, or anything else but the people themselves. Some one who rose up on their own individual merits, following the old Jeffersonian pattern. And wound up with a massive, almost unheard-of 80% approval rating.

Yep, here someone comes along that fits the template of what the media bigwigs were always proclaiming to desire... and they wind up going absolute scorched-earth, an all-out mission to destroy, all in order to protect the innate corruption of a slimey Chicago pol, and the sleazy status-quo Obama and his ilk represent.

Yep I do. It was Nixon doing about 10% of what LBJ and JFK did to political opponents, regularly -- and with gusto. They enjoyed doing it!

Nixon was a political pussy cat compared to those two pricks, and everyone in the Washington establishment knew it.

Nixon's only sin in their minds was his proving that one of their favorite people (Alger Hiss) was both a liar and Joseph Stalin's stooge. The Washington establishment never forgave Nixon for embarrassing them like that. It took them 20 years to get him, but in the end, they did.

Mess with the establishment, (R's or D') and be prepared because they will try to kill you.

Somebody please help me out here. First of all, it’s an AP article, which raises a red flag for me automatically.

Beyond that, I read the article and slowly realized that it was just a rehash of a bunch of old news; stuff we’ve known for a long time. So what was the pernt, as Archie Bunker would say? Did they do that rehash just so they could call her a quitter one more time? Must have been a slow news day!
