Who in God's Name is Mitt Romney? Here's a troublesome quote right off the top...
"Back in the thick of the 2008 Republican presidential race, I asked a captain of American finance what he had made of Mitt Romney when they were young colleagues at Bain & Company. Mitt was a nice guy, a smart businessman, and an excellent team player, he responded without missing a beat. Then came the CEOs one footnote, delivered with bemusement, not pique: Still, whenever the rest of us would go out at the end of the day, wed always find ourselves having the same conversation: None of us had any idea who this guy was.
More ammo for Romney supporters to claim that only he can beat Obama. I’m getting tired of Romney and his supporters.
Unlike Nixons craggy face, or, for that matter, Gingrichs, Romneys does not look lived in. His eyes dont show the mileage of a veteran fighters journey through triumphs and hard knocksthe profile that Americans prefer to immaculate perfection in a leader during tough times
As if Obama's eyes show some kind of "mileage"?
As much as I'd prefer Romney not to be the front-runner, I would NEVER listen to Frank Rich.
We know all we need to know about Romney, enough to know he is not most of our first choice for the presidency or even second or third perhaps. But we also know he is not a corrupt, Marxist Man from Nowhere whom he would be running against in the General Election. Hence he is infinitely preferable to The Disaster.
What business colleagues knew about him is neither here nor there. Few where I spent my working days knew much about me and I cared to know little about them. So Mitt isn’t a Chatty-Cathy who likes to drink with the guys?
“Who in God’s Name is Mitt Romney?”
Ed Alberts writes from Massachusetts:
” I thought it very poor form where Romney shouted down the moderator at the start of the debate.
I live in Massachusetts where I am REQUIRED TO purchase abortion services as “a condition of breathing” as one commentator put it recently. Every insurance plan sold in MA — including those sold to Catholic employer’s employees — is REQUIRED to include abortions. By contrast, that of Federal Employees does *not* — at least after 1997 or so.
My jaw dropped when Mitt Romney said that. And when he said that he didn’t raise taxes — Barbara Anderson of Citizens for Limited Taxation (CLT) dubbed him “MittFee” for all the ‘fees’ he was raising, including a tax on nursing home bills (that may have been Jane Swift).
He took what had been a $5/lifetime ID card required to own a gun and made it a $100 every four years “fee”, saying “anyone who can’t afford it doesn’t have to own a gun.” Worse was what his Lt Gov said for the admin — elders were living in homes they had purchased years earlier and owned outright, but were having trouble with the ever-increasing local real estate taxes — the response was ‘they are overhoused and should sell the homes to pay the taxes and then move into a one-room apartment.”
