PHOENIX — Rick Santorum more or less acknowledged Tuesday that he said in 2008 that Satan was planning to attack America, but said it was irrelevant to voters today.
The Drudge Report blared at the top of its page Tuesday a speech that Mr. Santorum had delivered to students at Ave Maria University in Florida in 2008 in which he warned, “Satan has his sights on the United States of America!”
In the speech, Mr. Santorum added, “Satan is attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that have so deeply rooted in the American tradition.”
After Mr. Santorum addressed a small crowd here Tuesday evening for more than an hour on topics including Central America, education and limited government, he was shaking hands with voters when reporters asked about the Satan references.
“I’m a person of faith,” he said. “I believe in good and evil. I think if somehow or another because you’re a person of faith you believe in good and evil is a disqualifier for president, we’re going to have a very small pool of candidates who can run for president.”
Pressed on whether Satan was attacking America, he said: “These are questions that are not relevant to what’s being discussed in America today. What we’re talking about in America today is trying to get America growing. That’s what my speeches are about, that’s what we’re going to talk about in this campaign.”
He added: “If they want to dig up old speeches of me talking to religious groups, they can go ahead and do so, but I’m going to stay on message and I’m going to talk about things that Americans want to talk about, which is creating jobs,

This speech will be a bigger issue than Obama’s 20+ years going to “Reverend” Wright’s nazi-racist church.
Must have been one hell of a speech if people are still talking about it four years later.

It seems Obama has directed every abortionist, secularist and leftist out there is trying to make an issue of this speech from 2008. I listed to the whole thing, and it is an excellent speech!

The stupid media a-holes think this is a winner for them, but the more people who hear what Santorum actually said the more will agree that his comments weren’t controversial for words spoken from the pulpit.

He gave a speech that sounded like your paster; the speech was in 2008 when he was, to my knowledge, a private citizen not running for office. So, yes, why was that a problem?
The only “problem” I would have is if your pastor sounded a lot like Rev. Wright. If Santorum sounded like Rev. Wright (who Obama listened to Sunday after Sunday incidentally), then, yes, I guess I’d have a problem.
I didn’t listen to the speech, by the way. Is that indeed the problem? If so, why do you bother to listen to your own pastor? Please elaborate. Or is it that we would never, ever, elect a man of the cloth to public office, should he/she decide to run for office? Just how well has the Left in this country succeeded in marginalizing those who hold, and demonstrate, religious views?
Yes, but the image conjured up is that a red guy running around with a pitchfork is coming after American. A big part of the American population will think that’s nuts.

He is making all the right enemies and making all the right people squirm.

Mark Levin said last night in the beginning of his show that the candidates are being attacked by the MSM so they get off message. First it was about condoms, now it is about Satan and a certain campaign is behind this. He said to stay focused and attack the MSM back. We have nothing to lose.

He didn’t cave in the least. If he’d have done as you imply he should have, and went into a full-fledged defense of his speech, which needs no defending, he’d have taken the bait, and all we would see up until next Tuesday’s Michigan vote would have been sound bites taken from his defense, in Romney’s commercials, attempting to depict him as someone running to be the religious leader of the U.S., instead of the President.
The important take away is: “Do you think he’s disavowed, in any way, what he said in 2008 in that speech?” I sort of doubt it, so you know where he stands. But right now he’s running to be the President, not be appointed our religious leader. But it doesn’t hurt to know where he stands, does it? After all, we know where Obama stands, given his obeisance to Rev. Wright over the years.
Let the media try to make hay with this one. All it’s going to do in the general election is resurrect the good Rev. Wright for comparision. The ads will write themselves.
