This evening, speaking at North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said that folks getting and spending unemployment checks is a healthy thing . . . because it stimulates the economy: "Even though we had a terrible economic crisis three years ago, throughout our country many people were suffering before the last three years, particularly in the black community," Jarrett said. "And so we need to make sure that we continue to support that important safety net. It not only is good for the family, but it's good for the economy. People who receive that unemployment check go out and spend it and help stimulate the economy, so that's healthy as well."

Using her own logic the question becomes “If people spending unemployment benefits helps the economy wouldn’t the economy be helped even more if we left the money in the hands of the people who earned it, and $1 was spent for every $1 earned instead of the government taking $1 and giving people $0.50 to spend?”

Liberals simply cannot understand that the economy is all about production, they imagine that somehow consumption is what drives the economy. Some posters on FR seem to have the same opinion. I think the fact that only a tiny percentage have any exposure to farm life now is a part of the problem. Those who grew up on a little farm as I did can never become confused over which is really important, you learn at a tender age that you have to produce BEFORE you can consume.
