No school in the 50s and 60s that I attended had any vending machines and schools certainly did not sell soda. You could get a carton of milk for 2 cents for lunch and in the mornings and afternoons the water fountains were just fine for quenching thirst. After gym class, you also drank water from the fountain.

Actually, it was shocking to see the soft drink corporations make inroads into schools desperate for money. I don’t see anything wrong at all with banning vending machines, soft drinks, candy, chips, etc from our public schools.

Is it a mere coincidence that childhood obesity began to take off when vending machines were introduced into schools?
