President Barack Obama trails Republican presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in hypothetical general election matchups in a new poll of voters in this key swing state.
Santorum, a former senator from Pennsylvania, edges Obama 46 percent to 42 percent, while Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, receives 46 percent to Obama's 43 percent in the Christopher Newport University/Richmond Times-Dispatch survey of 1,018 registered voters taken Feb. 4-13.
Romney's apparent advantage over Obama is within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
On Feb. 7, during the survey timeframe, Santorum won caucuses in Colorado and Minnesota and the Missouri primary, giving his campaign a boost.
The president ties with Rep. Ron Paul of Texas in the poll at 43 percent each. In another head-to-head matchup, Obama edges former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich 45 percent to 40 percent.
Virginia's other marquee contest, a potential U.S. Senate matchup between former Govs. George Allen and Timothy M. Kaine, remains neck and neck. Allen, a Republican, receives 42 percent to 40 percent for Kaine, a Democrat.
The survey shows the president's job-approval rating as upside down in Virginia, with 43 percent approving of his performance and 53 percent disapproving.

Woo hoo!!!
Go Santorum!!!
Go Allen!!!
Go So-Co Twins!
They all should worry less about the polls and getting on the ballot. /s
McCain States + IN + NC + FL (Rubio) + VA + OH = 266 Electoral Votes.
Win one of the following, win the Election:
(NH, PA, MI, WI, MN, IA, NM, CO, NV)
Except for NH, I think a Santorum/Rubio ticket could sweep all those states, whereas Romney is looking only NH as best.
That looks wholly possible.
I love this if for no other reason Rick Santorum is turning the electability crap on its head. He is proving that running and not being ashamed of traditional ‘white bread’ (as some has called them) family values does not hurt electability. You see the same thing with movies. The Hollywood industry tries to push a gay/slut/addict/psychopath in every pot but which movies make the most money? The ones that exemplify traditional values. Santorum has done an excellent job proving the left and our own Rhino class/submissive self doubting conservatives wrong. I know he isn’t perfect but none are but he is winning without cowering and I like that. He has far exceeded my wildest expectations. He and Newt both have for that matter.
He is defeating the media and that is far more important task that is necessary if anyone is going to defeat Obama.
Team Romney seems intent on taking the tack of trying to appease the media. It is as if they have learned nothing from all the campaigning.
Terrific news.
The joke among conservatives voting in Virginia’s primary:
“So, who are you voting for?”
“Well, given my two choices, I’m voting for Ron Paul.”
Agreed. Santorum is quick on his feet and we need that in addition to conservative beliefs.
Me, too! My Paulitarian sons are happy.
Maybe a Virginia win will give the Paul zealots a reason to be happy. It hasn’t really been going their way as much as they’d hoped. :-)
