I personally think that the day Washington became truly great was at the end of His second term when He willingly and freely left the office of president. He set a precedent for the peaceful, ordered succession of Constitutional government.

Actually it happened before that. When he surrendered his commission at Annapolis in 1783. (Our governor McKeldin wrote a tiny little book on this called “Washington Bowed”, of which I have a copy.)
