Mitt Romney has raised the issue of the social safety net. Washington could learn from the lesson of his church.
Ever since Mitt Romney said he was "not concerned about the very poor" but would fix America's social safety net "if it needs repair," conservatives and liberals have been frantically making suggestions. Gov. Romney says he would consider options like restructuring Medicaid. But if he wants to see a welfare system that lets almost no one fall through the cracks while at the same time ensuring that its beneficiaries don't become lifelong dependents, he could look to his own church.
As I ride in a golf cart through a new 15-acre warehouse on the outskirts of Utah's capital, I can't help but wonder: How many Wal-Marts would fit in here? How many burgers can you make from 4,400 industrial pallets of frozen meat? And how do they keep this place cleaner than my kitchen floor?
Dedicated last month, the Bishops Central Storehouse contains a two-year supply of food to support the Mormon church's welfare system in the U.S. and Canada (primarily for church members in need) and its humanitarian program, which sends food, medical supplies and other necessities to the needy (of all faiths) world-wide.
In addition to goods from canned peaches to emergency generators, the facility also houses the church's own trucking company, complete with 43 tractors and 98 trailers, as well as a one-year supply of fuel, parts and tires for the vehicles. Just in case.
The storehouse is not only a kind of physical marvelit has been built to withstand an earthquake with a magnitude as high as 7.5but also a symbol of strength and self-sufficiency.

I was raised in a Southern Baptist church and made public profession in Christ and was Baptized in same church. Later I joined a small Independent Baptist Church. Those two churches are the only two I had any membership in or for that matter Baptist churches were the only ones I ever attended in my life too the best of my knowledge.
Right now I attend no church and haven't in about 17 years or so except for my daughters wedding also in a Baptist Church. However my family is very diverse. Half of my dads siblings were Roman Catholic the other half were Baptist. One cousin raised Southern Baptist married a member of LDS over 35 years ago I think.
Our family believes in Jesus Christ and when family is in need family comes first. I have a cousin who is a Roman Catholic Priest and works directly for a Bishop. When my first wife passed I asked him to do her funeral service and he gladly did. He was not the one who married us though due to his churches restrictions placed on him. He also presided over our uncles funeral when he passed a Non Roman Catholic. Oh yea I have two second cousin that are Baptist Ministers as well.
I'm as I said Baptist and my second marriage the wedding was held in a Roman Catholic chapel with several Nuns and a Priest as guest officiated by our Baptist Preacher. Boy that ought to stir the pot LOL.
I’ve been LDS all my life & am currently a bishop’s wife. Tithes are COMPLETELY voluntary. They are NEVER verified by the bishop. If you lie to the bishop that will be on your own head, for the Lord will not be mocked. All church members covenant to obey the commandments to the best of their ability, keeping in mind nobody is perfect. As Temple attendance involves making further covenants, only those who are doing a good job with their baptismal covenants are invited to attend. Tithes are just 1 on the list. The Lord rewards ALL obedience.
One of my uncles a former bishop required proof of income, “other wise how would we know the tithe was full”. I have a friend who is billed by her bishop. My cousin says someone comes to his house asking for tithe, each year being increased by some amount, and he has been trying to remove his name from membership for a decade or more.
Listen to the personal stories of former lds on FR, asking for proof is very common.
Those are my exact feelings with Romney and Newt. Between the two, if I squint with Romney, I can almost hope that I see a trend towards the right. With Newt, the only trend I can detect is Clintonian trend to triangulate and say whatever people want. However, neither of the two has the stuff that my ideal candidate should be made of.
Coming into this primary season I was very excited about the GOP’s young talent. But I think for most of them (like Rand Paul), it is four to eight years too soon.
I’ll take UU for a thousand Alex.
Yes indeed, by their fruits, ye shall know them.
I suspect that the attacks are to keep the light from shining on themselves.
After all, that which is done in darkness shall eventually be shown for all to see.
Keep up the good work Brother for they know not what they do.
Fruits really? That maybe the most misquoted Bible verse ever. This verse is is reference to false prophets and yes we know that Joseph Smith was a false prophet.
Well word of this got too Brother Thatsasin the preacher and he accused my uncle of living in sin with a woman whom he was not married too and took it before his church.
That church was built in part too my uncles time and money given too it as well as the very land it sat on IIRC. He was a long time Deacon and Elder of that church as well. No it wasn't LDS it was Baptist. My uncle had a good reputation all his adult life in all communities he lived in and in his military service retiring as a Navy Commander. Their home was also often used for ones visiting of the church such as for guest preachers at revivals.
He needed caregivers because his wife and their only child which was their son had passed before he did. It was his wifes wishes that her family care for him as they lived very close by and his family was considerable distance away.
You can look at any denominations at a specific church and sometimes find individual leaders who are out of line. All denominations have them.
There was more Christ in that brother and sister shown toward my uncle than was allowed by the membership in that church that condemned them for a sin that could have never taken place too start with. Where were they in his need? It cost the church. He changed his will and left all he had too the two who cared for him.
The UU's do use the Jefferson Bible {a highly edited Holy Bible especially in the NT portion denying Christ Divinity} but actually another church is far more active in removing mention of GOD from public places. Ever hear of Americans for Separation of Church and State? It's leader is a minister of United Church of Christ as is Obama's preacher Jeremiah Wright for that matter. Here ya go this should explain a lot
Your uncle could go to another Baptist church, he was not kicked out of Christianity, or even the Baptist denomination, even if your less than credible story is true.
The Mormon Bishop’s rejection is a rejection of the entire religion to you, what are you trying to sell here anyway?
Preferring Romney to Gingrich, says it all.
You make a temple recommend sound pretty easy, and evidently the Bishop is absolutely required to solely take the applicants word, even if the Bishop thinks the applicant is lying, according to you.
See post 103.
Troll, Troll, Troll, your boat.
Your agenda isn’t so hard to see through.
No one really knows what that era was like. Most of it is speculation even amongst the most educated theogigans. Too me it does seem to hold true though with several places GOD intervened to keep mans knowledge and at least till His Divine plan is fulfilled keeping man from acquiring eternal life in their sinful state as well at that point and I quote from Genesis ch 3
22Then the LORD God said, The people have become as we are, knowing everything, both good and evil. What if they eat the fruit of the tree of life? Then they will live forever! 23So the LORD God banished Adam and his wife from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made.
Next intervention to stop mans progress came at the flood. The next occurred at the Tower of Babel. GOD stopped it again because He had a plan for mans salvation.
I'm not LDS. But I can see where they acquire some of their beliefs. Much the same way I can understand how Roman Catholics acquired theirs. Then add too that the differing sects in Protestant such as Calvinist etc you can find lots of various beliefs and as I'll point out and prove with the two FR links.Southern Baptists to hear recommendation on name and this one Election -- God's gracious purpose (Baptist Caucus) There is a lot of jealousy it seems as to whom is right even in the same denominations.
I also posted I have not been to church in 17 years and I am telling the truth. I also haven't been to work in 17 years either for that matter. I have a neurological condition that limits how much certain sound and noise as well as type of it I can tolerate at any given time. A condition that triggers seizures hitting my upper torso much like suddenly getting hit with bucket of ice water. Last week I attended a meeting in a family members place where a person was speaking and it began triggering it. My own dads funeral did as well. I had too warn the preacher before hand so he wouldn't think something was wrong.
GOD gives each person their mission and purpose while on this earth and to Him we all one day will give account which determines our rewards. The theology, dogmas, and doctrine, differences GOD will resolve and unite in His own time.
LDS is not politically nor morally tearing this nation down. Yet churches that are doing just that are getting free pass all because Romney is running for POTUS and rather then debate the man on his failed polices people attack his faith and it may well just backfire.
No Christian can stand by and watch an anti-Christian cult, seduce Christians away from Christ through lies and deceit, and fake imagery and language.
Mormonism as not being Christian is something that all Christian churches agree on, Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox.
There is another church many consider Christian the breaks many of the teachings Christ gave including even how to pray and too whom specifically should we only pray too for our needs. Two running for POTUS belong to that church.
But as I also pointed out earlier the purity test some on this thread are using would make Thomas Jefferson and Ben Franklin, and possibly even ones like George Washington as Non Christians non Catholic as some of the fouders did not believe in the divinity of Christ nor were they Jewish. Would we be seeing post on them as well? Nah I haven't seen even one thread in FR devoted to Universal Unitarianism or Deism as it was called then.
These threads are mainly for the purpose of bashing Romney through his religion. After the election they will quickly fade. No I am not voting for Romney so don't go there.
Some agenda you have there.
You seem anti-Christian and pro Mormonism.
Bishop Romney and his evil cult have a good ally in you.
But hey Goober you did prove these threads really are simply a means too attack Romney just like I said it was LOL. If Romney wasn't running and a Mormon you wouldn't give a care and you know it. If Romney was a Pentecostal you'd be bashing them as well if you thought it would inflict damage on him.
Nice talking to ya Troll. You know after a while it really gets very old. You Troll threads looking to twist peoples words and accuse them of beliefs or making statements they did not make. You keep coming back time after time baiting posters using that tactic. That is why I did not answer you before nor will I again in the future. BE GONE. Go work on Gore's Earth Friendly 10 flush Commode or something. LOL
Well you did your duty of defending Bishop Romney’s cult, and attacking all Christian challengers.
Christians will be speaking out against Mormonism and Islam even after the Bishop is through with his White Horse Agenda though.
If my purpose in posting were to defend Romney why would I support Santorum for then? LOL If I am attacking all Christian Challangers then again why would I vote for Santorum. I’n not voting for Newt because of his ever changing stands on issues for political points. I’m voting Santorum because I think his heart is in the right place and his home life shows as much. Now Folks watch the Troll pop in and twist it. He can’t help himself LOL.
