Pop quiz: Which Republican presidential candidate supported the confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor?

Hint: It’s the same one who endorsed a pro-abortion-rights presidential candidate in an earlier campaign.

Give up? The answer is Rick Santorum.

Santorum was rightly known as a conservative firebrand during his 12 years in the Senate, but the 1998 confirmation vote for Sonia Sotomayor to the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals was a notable exception, and so was his endorsement of Arlen Specter’s bid for the 1996 Republican presidential nomination

No shame on YOU for condoning a sell out of conservative principles! even McCain voted nay, even Rush warned about her nomination to the circuit court as being a stepping stone to the SCOTUS; he crossed the line and voted with a majority of democrats as Trent Lott tried to stall her nomination for quite some time.
IF you had the choice in your neighborhood of voting for a leftwing judge...would you compromise? this is an issue and yes, like it or not it will come up often during the campaign and not just on Free Republic.

Very well stated Marguerite, but you always make great points. Yes, Santorum compromised his conservative social beliefs to cross party lines and vote yea on a liberal, left wing judge.
This is a conservative talking point..not a liberal one as many try to defend. How do you defend the indefensible?

Like it or not..for months Newt has been bashed, slammed attacked and not only by the media and establishment but on FR...well, brace yourself as it is now Santorum’s turn. No more free pass.

I don't work for Santorum, and don't care if he folds like a cheap camera under pressure. I want the best anti-Romney to win. That's what I've always wanted. I first backed Bachmann, then Cain, then Newt, now Rick. One by one they fail and Mittens stays alive. It is as depressing as 2008 with McCain, when I backed Hunter, then Thompson then...nobody.

The COUNTRY is NOT the conservative electorate. Playing favorites on our side based on what the MSM churn to the top is exactly playing their game by their manufactured rule book.

Once again our side is playing like a bunch of junior high boys standing at the bus stop watching the new girls in the school getting off the bus. The story in JUNIOR HIGH goes like this...
"Not that one, she is wearing purple nylons."
So no one pays attention anymore to her.

Next day "gross, she has a long skirt on" Yeah, she is off the agreed on favorites list from now on.

Next day "Ooooh, look at her braces" "Gross"
So now the crowd at the bus stop doesn't pay any attention any loner to her

This goes on and on for several weeks.
So now we come to the day after the Thanksgiving vacation.
The boys notice there is no new girls to "rate", and now they verbally pick on each other. As the days wear on the eventually realize that not all those "new" girls are "new" any more.
From here on the boys realize that there were some good qualities on many of the girls who started out the year here at local junior high. But now they are getting close to the year end dance, and they are mostly too afraid to be seen with the girls that all have "failings and flaws...".

So mostly the boys at local junior high" don't ask anyone of the girls at their school to the dance.
However they find out the Monday after the dance some boys from "the school nest town over" were at the dance.... with the girls they had all said were not any good.
When the NEXT day they see the pictures from the dance they see how great many of those girls looked.. well, surprisingly great!
Most of the guys now wished they had been there too... but they blew it.
So was the girls from "local junior high" the problem here? After all they were not good enough for the boys from "local junior high" who had stayed home and...... played video games.~~~~
Is it the girls fault? After all that first few days they wore skirts that were too long, or had braces, or wore purple nylons, etc... (of course they were probably different after that first day), but the boys were already too jaded from the opinions the other boys as a group had mentioned those first few days...
Now to end the story you maybe got to thinking that the boys from "the junior high from the next town over" did go and now the word is they had a great time. So did most of the girls from the "local junior high"... in fact many of they are now "dating~~~" boys from the "junior high from the next town over".

Have the un-jaded boys from other schools had pixxy dust put on them? Did they just not hear all the reasons they should not think it was cool to be with so many girls from the "local junior high"
In fact the other boys had a great time with the girls! Not all of the boys, some from "local junior high" had never been part of the "rate the girls in the morning group", and in fact had made up their own minds.. and benefited from their own choices and many of them had dates from the girls at their "local junior high".

Have we seen anything like this in the grown up world????

To clarify, when Santorum moved left to win in PA it’s ok but when Romney moves left to win in MA it’s worse?

Don’t understand how one is worse than the other. There’s really no consistent conservative in the race once records are reviewed (though Romney seems to have governed futherest to the center/left but also in a state that was more center/left).

Gingrich gets “damned” by the Rick-crowd, for having supported a GOP candidate, named by the local Republican party, but Santorum must get a pass for supporting the pro-abortion Arlen Specter, voting for the liberal Sotomayor and thus opening her way to Supreme Court, and pandering to Romney in 2008, by calling him “the true conservative who can carry our colors”?

Santorum blames Bush for his endorsement of Spector..sounds rather like Obama blaming Bush for a windy day. Fact is ..Santorum compromised his “strong” social beliefs and crossed the line...not once or twice but three times.

Not sure to whom your post is directed or what its point is.

However, in the real world Santorum is the most conservative candidate running for the nomination by a large margin.

You could do the same sort of thing for any candidate, including Reagan, and list questionable, disgusting or mistaken votes. Santorum’s list is smaller than anyone you could propose as a alternative.

Perhaps you are having problems believing that we will not get a more conservative nominee than he. But it is a FACT.

Here is how politics works - those who help you, you help. Once you get a reputation for turning on those who help you your political career is pretty much finished.

It is not pretty but that is the way a representative democracy has always worked and how it will always work.

This is irrelevant as far as this election goes and such attacks can only help the Left and Urkel. I expect many more as Rick gets stronger.

Seems Santorum and Romney are paddling the same boat, now that they have BOTH dropped out of the debate. Question for the Santorum crowd! So when he jumps on the Romney ticket, you guys going to still love him? Actually, how he handled the Spector and Sotomayer debacles should give you a glimpse of how he cuts deals. He can make every excuse in the world, what he really wanted was a membership in the DC big boy’s club.
