It wont work, there is no way that Romney can credibly claim that Santorum is not a conservative, that just won't pass the laugh test.

let him try to attack Santorum and it will backfire and destroy what's left of his campaign.

Romney is going to have to sell himself this time or he could possibly argue that Santorum is too far right to win the general, but both of those are a far cry to what he did with everyone else in the race.
