The mother knew that her boyfriend was an abusive thug who had repeatedly physically abused her child in the past, but she let him babysit her child anyway, and now the child is dead. I’d say that morally, the mother is just as guilty as the person who actually killed the child.

Agreed. In these types of cases the mother - if you can call her that - belongs in jail also.
