Still riding high off of his three-win streak in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado last week, Rick Santorum blasted Republican rival Mitt Romney on Sunday, saying the GOP frontrunner was getting "desperate" by trying to paint Santorum as anything less than a true conservative.
"For him to suggest that I'm not the conservative in this race - you know, there's - you reach a point where desperate people do desperate things," Santorum told me on "This Week."
Santorum's comments were in response to statements Romney made earlier in the week that both Santorum and his fellow GOP rival Newt Gingrich are "Republicans who acted like Democrats."
"That's pretty funny for Mitt Romney saying I'm acting like a Democrat," Santorum said Sunday. "Another candidate has come up to challenge him, and this time he's having trouble finding out how to go after someone who is a solid conservative, who's got a great track record of attracting Independents and Democrats and winning states as a conservative."
Santorum said that despite his third place finish in the Maine caucus on Saturday, he expects to "do exceptionally well" in the Arizona and Michigan primaries the end of the month. The former Pennsylvania Senator his strong showing in the next two contests would make the GOP nomination a "two person race."
Santorum credited Romney's success thus far not to his policies or record, but to his fundraising prowess. Romney currently leads Santorum in the delegate count 105 delegates to Santorum's 71 delegates.
"He's been able to win in these early primary states by, you know, beating the tar out of his opponents by four- and five-to-one on television," Santorum said. "Well, of course, in the fall, he's not going to have the most money."

That is why I will not vote for him.
That's a good idea, and right now, "strategic" means working toward a brokered convention, after Romney is prevented from winning a clear majority of delegates pre-convention, and where the majority of convention delegates will be for NOTT-Romney, and some principled conservative will be chosen after the first round of pledged votes produces no clear majority.
Neither Romney nor Santorum will be such a "principled conservative" to be selected at convention.
In the meantime, we need Santorum to win the mid-west and northern union states, which he probably will, and for Gingrich to win the southern and western conservative states, and hold Romney to win in only the few tiny northeast communist states (and Utah, which is a separate planet), which he probably will.
The sanctimonious Santorum is about to hit my last nerve.
Why? Cuz he won’t take Romney’s crap? Are you a Romney supporter. You have always praised Romney but didn’t think you wanted him as the nominee. I can’t stand Romney and if he can’t get under Santroum’s skin, good on him.
Agree, TF. The goal is to defeat Romney and whoever can do that has my support.
Educate yourself.
Read up on the financials around his now defunct charity "Operation Good Neighbor" (over 6 years, only 36% was doled out; it never registered with the state), on his leadership PAC (only 18% went to candidates, it enriched his staffers), his cozy $550,000 mortgage he wasn't eligible for with a private bank operated by a major donor, his work with Tom DeLay to build ties to lobbyists via the "K Street Project." He bilked a local Pennsylvania school district out of $72,000 for home "cyberschooling" for his kids ... living hundreds of miles away, in Virginia.
He was so important to GlaxoSmithKline they described him as a "big hole that we need to fill" when he lost his Senate reelection.
These are all things known and reported by the very PA state press charged with following him during his Senate career.
Keep looking. It gets worse for this sainted senator. Don't fall for the siren song of Santorum.
He is the type Sarah Palin warned about at CPAC in throughout her 2011 Tea Party speeches. Santorum needs to be fully vetted, not given a free pass because he talks nicely of Life and Marriage.
We all know what Romney is and Newt's got nothing left to hide.
Santorum is against liberal-tarians trying to use the tea party to push the sodomite agenda. Liberal-tarians are not conservative and they hate real conservatives like Santorum more than they hate liberals.
“I sure hope the folks here on FR are finally wising up to Romneys slime machine.”
The stupidity of this statement is breathtaking.
Where the Hell have you been?
Because we’re WAY ahead of you, preacherman....
Talk about leading from behind....
Santorum was always a tool of the RINO machine here in PA as a senator and he helped the national GOP-E by flying all the way to Alaska to help RINO Lisa Murkowski in a Senate primary fight back in 2004.
As a Fox News commentator in 2010, Rick said it was OK for Murkowski as a write-in to beat the Republican Tea Party candidate Joe Miller because she would “vote with the Republicans.”
Rick thinks Pro-Abortion RINO’s like Murkowski are OK???????
I think you’ve got that right on the money.
I did just that. Rick is definitely NO friend of the 2nd Amendment. I think an awful lot of Santorum supporters have absolutely no idea of his record. He is not at all fiscally conservative. His instincts are not on the side of Liberty. This guy's claim to fame is two terms in the Senate. What leadership position has he ever had?
His increasing "better than thou" attitudes is grating.
Newt has very concrete approaches to taking on D.C. Rick is out mostly tooting his own horn about how he is the most Conservative. Only recently you can see his is copying a lot of what Newt's been saying for months.
Well, Newt ain't perfect, but I believe he is the most serious about taking on the establishment.
I suggest you seriously look into Ricks record on the 2nd Amendment. I have. It is appalling. Rick's record is NOT one whose first instincts are Conservative. Geez, this Rick worship is becoming pathetic.
Another false conservative flailing away for $.
Fl. isn't really considered a 'southern' State because of it's weird makeup.
Santorum hasn't won anything of note, what he has done is keep Newt from gaining momentum, exactly what the Romney forces wanted.
Santorum will deliver his delegates to Romney.
Bill Cunningham is a Romney bot. He’s status quo. He’s go along, get-along.
Sorry, but your opinion is less than insignificant compared to his.
If high ratings is your criteria, Obama is your man.
lol
I don’t worship Rick, I barely even like the dude, but I would crawl over broken glass to vote for him if it kept Romney from the nomination.
My primary goal is to stop Romney.
And if voting for Santorum (puke) will accomplish that, then so be it.
