It is idiotic for people to be upset over symbols.
So if your kid came home wearing a Che Guevara tshirt, you wouldn't be upset at all? If they went around with an armband on that had a swastika on it, wouldn't bother you? If they had a big red flag with a yellow hammer and sickle hanging in their, no big deal, right, only idiots get upset over symbols.
How about if they slapped a rainbow bumper sticker on your car? Anybody give you dirty looks, you going to tell them they are idiots because it's just a symbol?
Heck, I bet your okay with burning a United States flag, because after all, it's just a symbol, and it's idiotic to get upset over somebody burning a symbol, right?

Given that the flag of these great United States is considered a living thing, it is more than a symbol. If my children come home donning certain symbols I will consider it an opportunity to ask what it means to them and if they understand what the symbol may communicate to others. Why should I get upset about what they think? When their actions are inconsistent with the rules of this household, then we will have something to be concerned about.
