The Obama administration's new mandate that religious organizations pay for their workers' birth control has become a bludgeon for Republican culture warriors, as social issues have surged to the forefront in the presidential campaign.

The Catholic Church has amassed a large hospital, medical care system throughout the United States, and the World. I just had a stunning email exchange with an emailer from Great Britain who is on a huge crusade because the healthcare system there won’t give the disabled what they need. She makes a long lefty rant and then closes with:take care of yourselves because this govt won’t. It shows that deep down she understands. I wrote her and asked if there were Catholic hospitals and charities or other sorts of private clinics or private charities there. She wrote back that she had no idea if there were catholic hospitals, probably not. She said that there were private facilities beyond the reach of most. But MOST STUNNINGLY to me was when she wrote: “I have no idea what a private charity is.” This just makes me reel unless it is a language problem and they do have private charities but by some other name. My, my, my. They don’t even know how to help one another any more? We don’t want that sort of country.
