A tech company suing Apple over use of the iPad name in China has upped its demands - saying it wants $1.6billion and an apology. China-based Proview Electronics won its case against the U.S. giant for alleged infringement for of its trademarked iPad name. But Apple, which had countersued, appealed the decision and the lawsuit is yet to be resolved.

Yeah, those wacky Chinese — paragons of virtue when it comes to respect for IP.
Apple bought the trademark from display manufacturer Proview Electronics (Taiwan) for $55,000 in 2006.
But, Proview claims the deal did not include the rights to the trademark in China, as those were owned by Proview Technology (Shenzhen), a subsidiary of Proview International in Hong Kong.

Sounds like ProView (Taiwan) sold something they didn't own.

Good call, that could well be.
But that's why there is a trademark register, so one can look up the details for a specific mark, like who owns it, and if that who does not exactly match the who you're making a deal with, trouble will follow.
Someone on Apple's side screwed up big.
