I hope Apple has greased the hands of the right Party bosses. Sounds like a case of "legal" extortion. Dark irony of a Chinese company suing a US based company over "protecting" intellectual property,

Proview registered the IPAD trademark in 2001 in China for its own unsuccessful tablet computer called the I-PAD.

Apple bought the trademark from display manufacturer Proview Electronics (Taiwan) for $55,000 in 2006.

But, Proview claims the deal did not include the rights to the trademark in China, as those were owned by Proview Technology (Shenzhen), a subsidiary of Proview International in Hong Kong.

The Lawyer's Full Employment Act is in play here.

Sounds like ProView (Taiwan) sold something they didn't own.

I finished the Steve Jobs biography last night. I never realized what a repugnant person he was.

Good call, that could well be.

But that's why there is a trademark register, so one can look up the details for a specific mark, like who owns it, and if that who does not exactly match the who you're making a deal with, trouble will follow.

Someone on Apple's side screwed up big.
