Santorum was deprived of any momentum out of Iowa because of the muddle with the votes in Iowa and intervening expected NH win for Mitt. Newt also enjoyed the benefit of a backlash against the lib media because they brought out his Ex in the week prior, and he punted it back in their faces in the debates. Before last night I think you also had the same backlash effect because of the Catholic healthcare issue with Obama and the court decision on homosexual marriage that gave Santorum the bump yesterday. Santorum may be regional, but so is Newt. I would say Santorum has an edge many don't see, he's very good at the retail level. Some pundits say the pause before super Tuesday will suck Santorum’s momentum. I think it will be the opposite because it will give him time to do retail. He'll be stronger because of the pause.

When a former POW named McCain can barely win SC and other Southern states, a young Northerner who never served in the military will not do better. If Santorum had been declared the winner of Iowa he would have still been destroyed in SC. Newt Gingrich won by 12 percentage points. A few months before that he was leading by 20 points or more. Santorum barely registered. Newt is from Georgia and if there is a qualified Southerner on the ticket (especially one with the credentials of Gingrich), he is not going to get beat by a Northern politician. Ain’t gonna happen. Now if Newt were to drop out and endorse Santrom and campaign with him then Santorum could carry the South. If not, no way in hell he beats Newt Gingrich in any Southern state.
