Declaring that he is in the race for the long haul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich floated the possibility Tuesday night that Republicans may have the first open convention since 1940.
Im certainly in it all the way to the convention. Well see what happens, Gingrich told CNN. At the rate were going, you could have the first open convention since 1940 which would give you something to cover that you would just love.
In the 1940 Republican National Convention the first televised contest Wendell Willkie of Indiana was nominated for president on the sixth ballot in Philadelphia, according to various reference sources...
Gingrich predicted that Romney will not do as well as he did in 2008 in those states. Missouri has no delegates at stake in its primary.
I think the big story coming out tonight is its very hard for the elite media to portray Gov. Romney as the inevitable nominee after tonights over...,
Gingrich said that he has been focusing on winning the battleground state of Ohio during the March 6 Super Tuesday battle, when voters in 10 states head to the polls.
We, I think, have a very real chance of winning Ohio so its very exciting to be here, said Gingrich, who is also focusing on Arizona and Michigan on Feb. 28 and Tennessee and Georgia on Super Tuesday.
I think were going to do very well on Super Tuesday. Were going to compete very intensely in Arizona and Michigan, he said, noting that he spoke with Texas Gov. Rick Perry earlier today.
We have a very strong operation in Texas. We have a very strong operation in Georgia. Our goal is through Super Tuesday; we then go to Alabama and Mississippi and then we go to Texas... (snip)

As far as I’ve seen Kristol isn’t backing Romney. He’s pretty much said he wants a brokered convention and wants someone other than the current crop to be the nominee.
I can tell you this.
When Santorum gets the heat applied to him, he is going to wilt like a petunia in the Tx heat.
He has had NO vetting.
In ‘08, Romney won CO with 61 percent of the vote. If he loses CO tonight, Katie bar the door.
yes. I hope he implodes after this.
Could happen. But, you know, Jeb, mitch and christie would also be in the mix. Guy like DeMint might be acceptable to both cons. and GOPe.
Newt does not know how unpopular Rick Perry is in Texas now; after embarrassing this State the way he did with his pathetic run in the Primaries.
Sure he will. He has organization and money backers-
I know who!
How did Mitt get the nickname Mittens? It sounds appropriately derogatory.
Well, an open convention would be fun, anyway.
He’s unpopular with you and a bunch of folks that cant keep their eye on the prize.
I see him working hard to get these new voting districts settled as quickly as possible.
I’m not saying Perry will reenter the race, I’m saying he will help shape it.
Please address your provocations to some one else— it’s not my style. Thanks.
There’s only one non-candidate with a national support network.
I’m interested in how the CPAC keynote goes this weekend.
Governor Perry - i love him - is going to be campaigning for Newt steadily till Super Tuesday, and so are Fred Thompson and Herman Cain. They’ve already started.
Ahhhhh 1940 and Wendell Wilkie. My grandfather was good friends with Mr. Wilkie. The 1940 convention was one for the ages. Talk about smoke filled back rooms.
“Theres only one non-candidate with a national support network.”
Are you referring to Palin?
Yup.
And Newt is the ONLY one close to Romney for delegates.
Santorum need to GTFO.
The old conventions were exciting. Now, with these polls, and calls after 1% voting and exit polls— they take the enjoyment out of game.
“The old conventions were exciting”
How true.
