Obama Cuts Hazard Pay for Soldiers Serving in Harm’s Way
Gateway Pundit ^ | 2/6/12 | Jim Hoft

They will now only get the $7.50 daily proration for the individual days they are actually serving in harm’s way instead of for the whole month. (DOD)

Barack Obama cut pay for military men and women serving in harm’s way starting this month. The Army Times reported:

Starting this month, some troops will begin receiving less Imminent Danger Pay when a new policy takes effect that will prorate the standard $225 monthly IDP stipend.

Under the new policy, troops will be paid only for the actual days they spend in the danger pay location, defense officials said Thursday.

Under the previous policy, troops who spent any portion of the month in a danger pay location received danger pay for the entire month.

The proration amounts to $7.50 per day. So, for example, if a service member spends only 7 days of the month in Afghanistan, he or she will have only $52.50 in Imminent Danger Pay added to their paycheck.

Doug Ross reminds us:

This follows efforts by the president to make veterans pay for their own health insurance — even those injured in combat — and his calls last month for raises for millions of federal paper-pushers.

If you think that this will cause a uproar in Congress or that the GOP candidates or the nominee will be jumping in[protesting] then you don't know either the GOP candidates or the Congressional Republicans.

When obama says,"Kiss my as", he has a ten mile long line of Republicans on their knees and puckered up.

To even think that a republican would oppose obama on anything, one would have to have the optimism of a red bug crawling up an elephant's hind leg with rape on his mind.

In a way, I support this. I remember how many Colonels and Generals would time their visits to the troops...arriving on the last day of the month, and departing on the first of the next month. 36 hours in theater, and in return they got 2 months combat pay and two months tax exemption.

However, I’d feel better about it if they would also increase the combat pay to say...$20/day. Most real combat troops would get a raise, while the high-up strap hangers would get much less.

You sound a little confused as to what “Eminent Danger Pay” is....Either those serving in a “Combat Zone” in “FOB’s” ARE in danger or they are not. Which is it?

The military is the first target when they start cutting, we have little to no backing. FUBO and Panetta. The military hierarchy are all sycophants.

Some are. Many are not. Just because are in a combat zone, doesn’t mean you should receive Imminent Danger Pay.

I do not know when the last time you have visited Kuwait, but to receive Imminent Danger Pay while being in that country is a joke.

Second part to that would be that just because you dropped in to say hello for one day, doesn’t mean you should be entitled to a full month of Imminent Danger Pay.

Does that clear it up for you?

These two agree with the President

When it comes to sacrificing both blood and money, the military always comes first. The kicker, the same politicians who pick "the cuts" often assign "more work" in the process.

“The change was mandated by Congress as a part of the 2012 budget, and the Pentagon announced the implementation of the new rules on Thursday.”

Thank you.
That makes the headline a bit misleading, then.

How did this get by us at FR when it was being taken up by Congress?

I can see a change in flight pay for aircrew members coming where flight pay is pro-rated daily and credited only for the days you fly. This will expand to other hazardous duties as well.

The budget bill is undoubtedly hundreds or even thousands of pages long. Obviously, it’s childsplay to slip stuff in there .

I could be wrong, but i believe Kuwait has been a combat zone since Desert Storm.

It is major staging point/hub for forces on their way to and from Iraq/Afghanistan. However, to call it a combat zone is a bit of a stretch. Obviously, an elevated posture is required there. But to receive extra pay for being in imminent danger is wrong.

There are a few other places considered combat zones, and are entitled to Imminent Danger pay.

I'm at a point where I need my afternoon naps but I'm pretty sure that NO BUDGET has been passed by the House and Senate since Owhammy took office. Or has this been buried in the innumerable "Continuing Resolutions"?

Someone please tell me I'm wrong.

You raise an excellent point. We're way way past the point where a formal, open, honest process sets laws or allocates the public treasury.

Money is being raised and spent. The specifics remain murky.

This is not a bad thing.....this system was abused to death when I was in just a couple of years ago...Seniors would often drag their feet so they had to stay that extra day into the next month, people from everywhere would just come into country at the end of the month to get those two days of tax free/imminent fire pay.....Joe rarely got to benefit from this system, generally only those who had the authority to manifest themselves into country were able to benefit from this, with the notable exception of air crew. I would hazard a guess that there were a great many traveling expenses that were incurred just to get that person into country to get those months as tax free and imminent fire pay....but it wasn’t the rank and file Soldier
