I have mixed emotions on it. On the one hand, Newt really only scores points with voters when he is on the attack against Obama and liberals. That’s the only mode that works for him.
On the other hand, the campaign against him is the damnedest thing I’ve ever seen in intensity - way above what even Sarah Palin went through. Thus it would require a super human discipline not to fire back at it, and Newt is not blessed with that particular gift.
I think Mitt’s people - and Santorum and Paul - know that when everyone is talking about Obama, Newt wins. When everyone’s throwing food at each other, Newt loses. So Mitt (and Santorum) and Paul have turned it into an internal food fight on purpose.
Sad ... and so true it would seem. Hopefully Newt devises a way to break out of this Mitt and media-driven "Gauntlet".
Not to be picky, but that's not particularly correct. Newt's had a tough negative campaign against him, but it's only gone on for a little over a month. No biggy, just thought I'd chime in, Palin had it worse for a far longer time.
More to the point though, I watched this entire Gregory interview and thought Newt did quite well. I saw a lot of substantive positioning, good comebacks against a combative MSM interviewer, very little whining, other than on the part of David Gregory, Romney Obama shill.........
