INDIANAPOLIS -- A Kroger manager who fatally shot a man who police said was trying to rob the store voluntarily resigned Wednesday.
Elijah "Levi" Elliott, 24, shot Jeremy Atkinson, 26, at the Kroger store at 5025 W. 71st St. on Dec. 26, after Atkinson put an employee in a chokehold and charged at Elliott, police said.
Reading from a statement and standing beside his attorney, Elliott said he knew of Kroger's policy banning guns in the workplace, but said he had chosen to carry a weapon for the last three years.
Elliott said he feared for his life and that he does not regret his actions, but understands that he put Kroger in a difficult position.
"I hoped I never would have had to use my weapon for protection. Mr. Atkinson chose to commit a violent and dangerous act," Elliott said.
Prosecutors said last month that Elliott would not be charged because they believe the shooting was justified under Indiana law to prevent the commission of a forcible felony.
At the time of the shooting, Atkinson had a warrant out for his arrest in connection with a robbery and criminal confinement case.

Somebody, hire this guy.
The manager shot a fleeing armed suspect. Perp was picked up next day. Cumberland Farms fired the manager for violating company policy. He was hired the next day by a competitor's convenience store. They said, "We like having employees who are will to stand up for what's right and themselves."
Nice.
The irony is that this is just the type of man you want in a management situation. Thoughtful. Loyal. Decisive. The loser is Kroger as I doubt he'll be unemployed for long.

Elliott, who has worked at Kroger for six years, thanked the company for its support in the aftermath of the shooting and for being "genuinely concerned about my well-being." He said the company offered to keep him on, but he said he wants a fresh start.
Wow. A 24 year old manager of a Kroger store? He must have a lot on the ball — and I guess he proved it! Good for him!
I don't blame the man for wanting outta' there.
Perhaps he can start his own grocer.
Perhaps he resigned because they wouldn’t allow him to carry a sidearm. It isn’t a question of blaming Kroger’s. They’re attempting to avoid liability. However, if it were a tossup between defending myself or keeping a job, I think I’d prefer to attempt to ensure my personal safety. If I were disabled or killed, my family would also sustain a loss. It’s just cost-benefit analysis.
I work at MSFC in Huntsville. We must go through about 10 times the security background check that the sheriff's department conducts before authorizing a concealed carry permit so that we can get a badge to work on base. The Feds ban all weapons on base.
You would think that folks would realize that law abidign citizens are not the problem, law-breakers are the problem.
It has never been about crime. It has always been about deligitimizing firearms and self defense in order to further the power of the State. (at least since the beginning of the Progressive era, about 1900.
It’s actually quite easy to move up the ladder in stores like that. The vast majority of people that work there are only doing in temporarily, those that want to stay and move up the ladder can do so fairly quickly.
I heard his comments on the radio.
I think this just really shook him up and he doesn’t want to ever be put in that situation again.
Seems like a pretty natural reaction to me.

Well, you can add it to the other things you do not do—such as reading the article.
Kroeger owns lots of other chains and grocers across the Nation, too. Don’t just switch to another of their stores.
Damn! This guy can run the No Frills supermarket for me....after I conquer it in post-Obama collapse of civilization.
Just kidding.
He did the right thing.
And...allowing concealed-carry by employees and broadcasting it will make sure the crooks move....to the HyVee instead. Afterall, HyVee is where the rich and beautiful people shop. Better pickings.
