U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes there is "a strong likelihood" that Israel will strike Iran in April, May or June, according to the Washington Post's David Ignatius.
Israel believes that after this time, Iran will have entered a zone of immunity that will enable it to build a nuclear bomb at its leisure, Ignatius wrote. Defense Minister Ehud Barak used the same words Thursday in his speech at the Herzliya Conference.
"Very soon, the Israelis fear, the Iranians will have stored enough enriched uranium in deep underground facilities to make a weapon and only the United States could then stop them militarily," explained Ignatius. The U.S., however, does not intend to hit Iran until it has intelligence that Iran is actually building a bomb, and "Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu doesnt want to leave the fate of Israel dependent on American action..."
When Barak asked last month to postpone a planned U.S.-Israel military exercise, he may have been signaling that an Israeli attack is imminent, the senior journalist wrote. Barak "apologized that Israel couldnt devote the resources to the annual exercise this spring."
President Obama and Panetta cautioned Israel against an attack, because they believe it would derail "increasingly successful international economic sanctions" against Iran.

I wonder how we would take it if some other country were to say something similar about us and appear to be broadcasting our intentions to the enemy..

This is the Obama administration telegraphing, to Iran, that we won’t be involved and don’t want our assets targetted in reprisal for the Israeli attack. This is an election year, and Obama is afraid of any unintended consequences that may occur from this war that might affect his re-election. This of course makes him look even weaker than he currently does, such that the Israelis now have no respect for this wanker. Frankly, we are the only country that can take out this nuclear program, while simultaneously effecting regime change. That is what should be done, but as usual, the politicians want to kick the can down the road and let someone else handle it. Our former allies in the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE and others) now view us, rightfully, as an undependable ally. It is their paramount hour of need, and we are nowhere to be found.
You hit the nail on the head. And if by some happy convergence of events, Israel manages to do all that really only America can, all those Arabian former allies of the US will hate us even more, because they have been humiliated, getting their asses saved by Jooos! So they will fund more terrorist activity to show their ‘gratitude,’ and the US will pressure us further to commit suicide so there can be piece in our times. It almost makes President Mitt Romney sound acceptable.
I’m one of the ex-mormons who cannot find Romney acceptable. I am preparing for expatriation if he actually succeeds.
Australia, mate. Ideal for expatriating Americans. Lots of sun. Lots of space. But bring your own chick and keep an eye on her. They have a shortage.
