The rebuttal to those who claim that this will provoke a war would go something like this:

The religious people who are horrified by this will not place the blame with the rightful groups and individuals, but will blame “politics”. More evidence that politics is so corrupt it is best to stay completely out of it. The more they are persecuted, the more they will be disgusted with “politics”. (”All politicians are no good. They are all the same.”)

Forty years ago, some said, “things are not that bad! When they get really bad, then I will do something about it.” Now the same folks say, “things are so bad, there is nothing anyone can do about it.”

Self-governance is not seen as a Catholic concept, so it is not part of most Catholics’ religion. They believe that they have no obligation to participate in self-governance. Some believe that they are morally obligated to vote and doing so satisfies their civic duties.

Which Catholic theologian said:
“Piety in place of duty is no piety at all”? A lot of them pew-sitters have “bad theology” and they prolly ain’t gettin’ rid of it any time soon.

Addressing here, not "what Catholics do" or "what Catholics think," but "what the Catholic Church teaches": there's actually a quote from either Pope Pius XII or Pope Pius XI -- I don't have it at my fingertips, but it's findable -- that says that the responsibility of voting in a democratic state is "grave matter" ... that is, to neglect to vote without a good reason, or to vote for an evil candidate when there is a good alternative, is mortal sin, capable of damning the individual to hell for eternity.

I wish it could even provoke something a tenth as contentious as those OWS hippies’ demonstrations. It would sure as heck be better focused.

I reply I could ask, then WHY did sales of guns GO UP last year?

Is it because folks are getting prepared “just in case” ?

I think you might want to do a bit of research, sir.

Peter:

You just gotta stop being such a relentless Pollyanna!

If you are not already in the Knights of Columbus, join before it is too late. Make Scott join as well. Russell Council #10 at New Haven (nice HQ at State Street near Chapel Street) or San Salvador #1 (probably at St. Aedan's in Westville). Join an old traditional council in any event. There are plenty in Connecticut. You pay your dues and you get a traveling card that admits you to any council meeting of any council anywhere.
