WASHINGTON: Iran Is Expanding Terrorism And Spy Networks In America

Robert Johnson
January 31,2012

Adding to the Washington rhetoric regarding Iran, the Director of National Intelligence told Congress today that Tehran is expanding its support for international terrorism and spy networks against the U.S.

Tony Capaaccio and John Walcott at Bloomberg report that in a statement to the Senate Intelligence Committee, James Clapper said “The 2011 plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States shows that some Iranian officials — probably including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei— have changed their calculus and are now more willing to conduct an attack in the United States in response to real or perceived actions that threaten the regime.”

Clapper said that Iran's dedication to sponsor attacks is in response to "Iranian leaders perceptions of the U.S. threats against the regime." The Director went on to say that though al-Qaeda is fragmented, a larger, loosely connected international jihad movement is growing and continues to threaten America.

Clapper's report adds to the growing pile of information being built to form what could become the foundation for an eventual attack on Iran.

There is the unprecedented missile collaboration between the U.S. and Israel slated for October of this year that would keep incoming Iranian missile strikes in Israel to a minimum, following any attack on Tehran.

There is the near war-mongering article in Foreign Affairs by Matthew Kroenig that has everyone talking. Kroenig, an articulate and thoughtful writer apparently not given to wild extremes of opinion, makes the argument that an attack on Iran is "The Least Bad Option" and sums that reasoning up in his piece titled "Time to Attack Iran."

There is the IAEA report that systematically lays out Iran's apparent attempts to generate weapons grade radioactive material.
