The number of soldiers who fought for the Confederacy that couldn’t afford a single slave is conveniently ignored; today we’re led to believe that southern slaveowners alone fought for the Confederacy, while the truth is that a large number of poor whites in the South weren’t much better off than slaves (in fact, fear of economic competition from blacks motivated them during & after the war).
Can’t let facts get in the way of our convenient myths, though...
