It's consistent with this segment of the attorney's sentencing argument before Judge Jones:

"He comes here, to this court. He comes here to accept responsibility and to seek a fair and honorable resolution to this travesty of false assumptions, false testimony, false theories and false prosecution. He now stands convicted only of negligent dereliction of duty. He alone has taken responsibility not only for his own actions, but also for the actions of his Marines, who may have misunderstood his intent. He told COL Watt and Scott Pelley that he was responsible for everything his squad did or failed to do. There is no more honorable an expression of Marine Corps leadership than that. There is no better way to exhibit moral courage and integrity than that."
