The only analyses that show that ethanol is too expensive also totally discount the value of the residue as high protein food for livestock.
Sorry, you can't have it both ways. The residue has high market value and must be added back into the formula developed to show the costs and benefits of the practice.

BTW, regarding that URL you dropped in there, back in the late 1920s they faced an oil peak ~ then better technology came to the rescue and revealed there was a lot more oil than anyone had heretofore believed.
Earlier Henry Ford intended to build cars with engines that ran on ethanol. He was a big ethanol fan.
