In Monday night's Republican presidential debate out of Florida, Mitt Romney described his plan for reducing the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.: "self-deportation."
The former Massachusetts governor was responding to a question about his immigration position by Adam Smith, the political editor at "The Tampa Bay Times," who said he was "confused" about his stance on deportation.
"Governor Romney, there is one thing I'm confused about. You say you don't want to go and round up people and deport them, but you also say that they would have to go back to their home countries and then apply for citizenship. So, if you don't deport them, how do you send them home?" Smith asked.
Romney said "we're not going to round people up" but rather, financially struggling undocumented immigrants would choose to return to their home countries of their own volition.

Hey Mitt-why don’t we speed up the process by cutting off benefits to illegals?
Let’s be honest, Newt is talking about letting people stay and I believe he refers to many leaving on their own. In the earlier debates, it was Romney who responded by saying enforce existing law.
I don’t find anything confusing about either one’s position. If you really enforce work laws, illegals will go home.
The standard GOP establishment answer sanctioned by the US Chamber of Commerce.
Newt's immigration 'ideas' are idiotic and dangerously naive (or merely disingenuous). What if these 'boards' decide to keep every illegal, like L.A., Seattle, Houston et al would most likely do? They are already 'sanctuary cities'. And his endorsement of a 'military-only DREAM Act' is absurd. As this article points out, it is totally unworkable and a fig leaf for blanket amnesty: Military Cutbacks Undermine Major Rationale for DREAM Act.

I don’t think Mitt’s “plan” is any different from the status quo. How’s that working?
The term “self-deport” has been used on this very website for many years. It’s not as if Romney coined the phrase, as the media is trying to portray.
I’m just a highschool educated SAHM, but if I was running the show. I would secure the border: fence, national guard, border patrol, video, etc. Whatever it takes. Then I would make the penalties so steep for hiring illegals, fines and jail terms, for people hiring them that it would deter most from doing it. Lastly, I would stop all government aid to illegals. No free medical care. No free school. No help with food. No driver’s licenses. Automatic deportation for those caught. If those things were implemented, making life here very inhospitable, then many people would self deport. If Mitt isn’t talking about making life inhospitable, then they’ll stay here because it’s going to be better here then where they came from.
The majority of illegals do stay out of trouble BUT, they take jobs real citizens should be doing. They get our welfare rolls mightily and they line up for free healthcare, food, housing, clothing etc.
Now if you also care to address the issue, just check out how much money jailing illegals costs us including courts, jails, etc.
I’ve heard twenty percent of riminals in calif jails are illegals. Now if you include Florida, Arizona and the rest of the nation with ALL these costs you’re talking REAL money.
No problem with LEGAL immigration, just don;’t think we should allow folks who come here starting off by breaking the law to get a thin penny off the dole.
I've been saying this for years too. Hey, let's run for office. :-)
Those whom are still backing Romney also rival him in idiocy.
Or cut their hamstrings and drop them off in the Mexican desert. Maybe THAT will keep the illegal alien criminals from crossing back into the United States.
Hey birds of a feather! Are you a male? I suppose I would have to be VP then, but maybe not. I am good with a budget too. I can trim a lot of fat when needed.
Such is the nature of an elitist and the elite that supports him.
what moron would think of anyone getting free housing, medical, food and very little taxation riding on the coat tails of citizens of this nation would leave??? and have to work?????
Nope, a woman. I can multi-task too. LOL
