Newt Gingrich might have led Republicans to their first House majority in 40 years in the 1990s, but the prospect of the former House Speaker becoming their presidential nominee is producing significant GOP angst.
"If he's the nominee, it's a disaster. There is no way to sugar-coat it," said one GOP congressional strategist describing the tension after Gingrich won South Carolina.
"There is a reason most people who know him best aren't supporting him," said a former House colleague still serving in Congress.
Asked why he had endorsed opponent Mitt Romney if he had served with Gingrich for so long, a House Republican replied with a smile, "Because I served with Gingrich for so long."
Those GOP congressional sources and many others spoke on condition of anonymity because they believe Gingrich, who is running against the "Republican establishment," will only turn the criticism into his advantage.
"The less they talk to the better," said one of the GOP sources concerned about Gingrich, "it only feeds into his narrative that the establishment is out to get him."

That pretty much sums it up for me, too. I don't like his amnesty but it's not like any of them will rid of illegals in my life time.
The GOP is more scared of the Tea Party than the dems. Fear is blood in the water. Attack!
Does FR ever do any e-mail campaigns? If Newt wins FL, we ought to set up a spot to coordinate an e-mail campaign to Boehner and McConnell to tell them to lay off Newt or else.
Mitt wants amnesty, too. Newt is willing to give amnesty to people who have lived — and worked! — here for 25 years, provided a *community* board votes to approve it. So at least there is some limit on whom gets amnesty.
Are there any limits to whom gets amnesty under Mitt?
FR E-mail campaigns? You bet. Plenty of times. The most recent notable one I recall was during the Oct 2008 TARP debacle.
Now I see it, and just as I thought it will be. They will do anything in their power to see that OBAMA is reelected, but that was the same premise they had in backing Romney. They knew Romney could not beat Zero.
They don't want anyone beating their Golden Goose.
BUT WE WILL SHOW THEM SOMETHING DIFFERANT. President Gingrich has as nice solid ring to it. Lets make it happen.
If that was photoshopped, they could have done much better.
Still, there's somebody out there who probably loves her.
Also, remember that the TARP mess was a primary catalyst of the Tea Party Movement.
Mitt still wants his lawns tended by trained professionals. The Japanese-Americans gave that stuff up 60 years ago!
Fixed it. And yes it will.
“””If he’s the nominee, it’s a disaster. There is no way to sugar-coat it,” said one GOP congressional strategist””
And who exactly is this anonymous person? Or is the quote just a figment of Dana Bash’s imagination?
Nice try to cover for your hubby’s incompetence.
John King is married. Who’d have thunk it.
I thought everyone on CNN was as sexually ambiguous as Gloria Vanderbilt’s little Andy.
Husband: Jeremy B. Bash (m. 6-Sep-1998, div. 2007)
Husband: John King (CNN correspondent, m. 25-May-2008)
Were Dana and John doing the “thang” while she was still married to Jeremy?
Maybe that is why King was so intense about asking personal questions. Maybe he had a guilty conscience.
It is a disaster ONLY if you are a inside the beltway A$$ who fears that Newt might just work to tear your playhouse down!
Fully half the "GOP strategists" in Washington already work for the Romney campaign.
The other half have their resume's in.
Which immediately explains how much credibility Ms. Bash's reporting deserves.
I just saw a YouTube video of her reporting for CNN.
She’s really much doggier than that photo.
She needs to be working for CNN radio.
