Newt Gingrich might have led Republicans to their first House majority in 40 years in the 1990s, but the prospect of the former House Speaker becoming their presidential nominee is producing significant GOP angst.
"If he's the nominee, it's a disaster. There is no way to sugar-coat it," said one GOP congressional strategist describing the tension after Gingrich won South Carolina.
"There is a reason most people who know him best aren't supporting him," said a former House colleague still serving in Congress.
Asked why he had endorsed opponent Mitt Romney if he had served with Gingrich for so long, a House Republican replied with a smile, "Because I served with Gingrich for so long."
Those GOP congressional sources and many others spoke on condition of anonymity because they believe Gingrich, who is running against the "Republican establishment," will only turn the criticism into his advantage.
"The less they talk to the better," said one of the GOP sources concerned about Gingrich, "it only feeds into his narrative that the establishment is out to get him."

My guess is that the same comment will apply to Niki Haley. The only thing I can think of is that the “establishment” pressure behind the scenes has been intense. The truth of the matter is that the RINOs would be content to get back their committee chairmanships in the Senate with all the perks and let Obama have four more. They, from all outward appearances, are much more concerned about their personal circumstances than doing something meaningful for the country. Newt will upset their apple cart and that’s their main focus. Go Newt!!!

The only demise because of Newt’s rise or any other republican nominee is going to be OBAMA’S. Obama could’nt beat a dried turd in a tuxedo in Nov.

This is a fine example of excellent journalistic professionalism. If the quotes are true, then those RINOs have no balls. The RINOs and journalists like Bash and King are the reasons why we have a community organizing socialist residing in the white hut.
This is war. Steel yourselves and fight to restore the Republic.
Perhaps this is not the time to be sugar-coating things. The daunting and overwhelming fear among the non-Establishment persons of the conservative persuasion, is that Mitt Romney cannot and will not take the fight TO Obama, making this a referendum on the policies that have been in place since January 2009, and exacerbated more and more every day.
Romney SAYS he will stop all these abuses, but will he, really? The big question mark, is what he feels about what is without a doubt, the system he himself instituted in Massachuetts in regards to “mandated” health care. The “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”, the formal name of Obamacare, neither protects patients nor provides affordable care, and certainly shall not be able to do either in anything like a timely basis.
Depending on others to provide the basic elements of health care is not, and never was, the duty or responsibility of anyone other than the individual or those to whom the responsibility is delegated by law and by custom. The very young, the old, the infirm, and those who have suffered huge misfortune through either their own failing or the acts of others, are first and best served by those closest, and as designated by local authority. This responsibility should have never, ever, devolved upon the Federal government, because the very remoteness almost assures that timely and effective care will not be delivered. Even at the state level, there is a serious time factor, and the degree of assistance that may be provided always doubles back on the resources available.
In the end, it falls back upon the local community in which the unfortunate afflicted one dwells, and sometimes, an even more narrow definition of family, or religious affiliation, or neighbors. Do some of the subjects fall through the cracks? Yes, they do, but how many would just be left lying in the dust if the responsibility gets shrugged away and bucked on up to ever more distant supposed “benefactors”?
We cannot cure inequities of outcome, we may only attempt to assure equality of access to an upwardly mobile path. And by this I do not mean access to the fruits of others’ labor, only the opportunity to acquire fruits of one’s own.
Otherwise we all are reduced to a treadmill to oblivion, and the despair of the spirit that is its signature.
That is the complete antithesis of the American ideal.
That’s pretty much the case.
I believe that both Boehner (House) and McConnell (Senate) are up for re-election this year. If McConnell starts playing traitorous games, I’m sure some TEA Party people in Kentucky would not mind making things very difficult for him.
As for Boehner, we probably do need a new Speaker of the House, preferably a conservative.

I agree. But I think what we’re observing is more due to The Establishment not getting their way. They ALWAYS get their way...except in very rare circumstances when the Republican electorate (yes, there is one) steps up and essentially says: “No, our situation in the world is too dangerous for a country-club guy that is more interested in losing with dignity (ala Bob Dole, and McCain), than winning with a mandate.”
The last time this happened was 1980. Hopefully 2012 will be the next time.

I always go back to 1980 because it is the best parallel to what’s going on with Newt.
In 1980, The Republican Establishment tried to stop Reagan from being elected, first by trying to get Bush-41 nominated, and then by running John Anderson as a Third Party (to them Carter was a better choice than the ‘unstable’ Reagan).
Third Parties can work...Perot help greatly to bring down Bush-41 in 1992. But third parties are NOT effective against a candidate that has locked down the base (aka, Reagan). And given the Tea Party support that Newt now has, he is VERY CLOSE to that accomplishment.
