I have some very conservative friends, many of whom have used pot at least a few times in their lives, and most of them are of the opinion that our marijuana laws are draconian, though they do worry about the impact on usage of harder drugs if it were legalized.

Hmm, not sure. It seems kind of a side-issue considering the current situation we're in as a whole, so would that be wise to bring up? From what I recall, I think Newt has said he'd be cautious about legalizing it, though I can't find any specifics on what his current position is.

They are draconian, I agree. Personally, I'd rather drugs in general be decriminalizedprior to the early 20th century, there were little to no laws regulating substance use, and society didn't fall apart.
