I knew that Gingrich and Marianne had a troubled marriage, but I never knew just how troubled it was until I read the Best of the Web on WSJ, today.

Marianne called Gingrich on his birthday (around 1987) and told him that she was leaving him. He went home to find his house emptied. They signed a formal separation agreement and maintained separate residences for about six years. The separation agreement was signed, but never legally filed.

For some reason, they reconciled in ‘93 or ‘94, but is was never a happy marriage.

How many men would reconcile with a woman who once left them and took everything with her?

I’ve known more than my share of guys who had equally cold wives who for decades made miserable the lives of nearly everyone around them. Empirical evidence in my experience makes me tend to think Marianne is the destructive whirlwind here trying to up-end Newt. As for the truth — only God knows. But we can know Newt’s political record, and so I believe that is really what a moral people should use to decide whether to politically support Gingrich.
