When I think about “our lives, our fortunes, and our Sacred Honor,” and then see what's happening here, it sickens me to realize how absolutely mean and cowardly we've become. And how far even conservatives have wandered from our founding principles. It's not easy to watch people settle for one candidate as they gut a man who clearly has the qualities we've been waiting for in a conservative candidate.
They'll forgive one man who destroyed the heart of a wife to the extent that after all this time, her grief is still evident - they'll invoke Biblical quotations and God's mercy and they'll talk redemption, and yet they can't forgive another man for backing Arlen Specter, nor will they accept his repentance for this and certain votes he cast. All his years of fighting for the culture of life has earned him only contempt, accusations of weakness, and dehumanizing insults ranging from the mundane to the vicious.
If I've learned only one thing here it's that mercy is a very selective thing.
Excuse me, Lauren, but you're skirting pretty close to breaking the 9th Commandmant not to bear false witness. THE TRUTH, no matter how much you'd like to deny it, is that you personally have ZERO ZILCH NADA NULL idea whether or not Newt "destroyed the heart of a wife." NONE of us except Newt, Marianne, and the Almighty Himself, can know OR JUDGE what happened in that situation. We can and DO rightly judge Newt on his political record, some judging him harshly, some judging him more easily. THAT is SOLELY where your judgment of Newt should reside as well, FRiend -- on his POLITICAL record.
Biblical morality is the very source of our founding principles -- and withholding judgment on such personal failings as infidelity, and leaving it to GOD instead, IS PART OF BIBLICAL MORALITY.
