In December 2007, Mitt Romney was asked by Meet The Press host Tim Russert about the history of racism in the Mormon church, which excluded African Americans from participation until 1978. Romney claimed that his father marched with Martin Luther King. Romney would also claim that he saw his father march with Martin Luther King in a speech about his Mormon faith earlier that month. In 1978, Mitt Romney would tell the Boston Globe that he and his father both marched with Martin Luther King.
The problem is, Mitt Romneys father, George Romney, the former governor of Michigan, never marched with Martin Luther King. Mitt Romney would concede that fact to the Boston Globe in 2007. The Boston Phoenix could find no record of Mitts father, George marching with Martin Luther King at all.
Still Politfact reports that while George Romney never marched with Martin Luther King, he was supportive of Kings goals and of the Civil Rights movement,
But its also clear that George Romney, who served as governor from 1963 to 1969 and died in 1995, supported Kings goals at a time when few politicians did. When King visited Detroit and led a rally of 125,000 people in 1963, Romney issued a proclamation and sent personal representatives. (The Times report noted that Romney was Mormon and did not make public appearances on Sundays.) Two years later, Romney led a march of 10,000 people in Detroit to protest events in Selma, Ala. (King wasnt there.) When King died in 1968, George Romney attended the funeral.
George Romneys support of the civil rights movement put him at odds with the Mormon Church, whose Apostle, Delpert Stabley wrote him a letter criticizing him for helping the negro cause which went against the Prophet, Joseph Smith and God, who had cursed the Negro. So while Mitt Romneys father was not a racist, Mitt Romneys prophet Joseph Smith, who believed that the Black people were cursed, was.
Lemme guess, Papa Romney and Papa Obama car pooled together down to Selma, right?
LOL
MLK..
KKK...
So he was a few letters off. Hey, it was a long time ago, alright?
It was planned in support of the King March in Selma.
It wasn't in the same city, but Romney's father marched with King for civil rights on the same day. By plan. And you know I'm not a Romney supporter.
Mitt Romney said he “saw” his father marching with Martin Luther King. He said nothing about him marching on the same day. Either Mitt has delusional visions or he was lying. Both answers disqualify him for president.
Scoutmaster, I'm with Waryone on this one.
There would have been LOTS of ways for Mitt to say how supportive or how much in solidarity his father, George Romney, was with Martin Luther King without using the phrase that Mitt "SAW his father marching WITH Martin Luther King."
As an attorney, you especially know the power of supposed eyewitness testimony -- saw an activity happen -- when specific people present.
George Romney wasn't where Martin Luther King was.
Mitt Romney didn't see George march with Martin. It never happened. He didn't say he marched with a DC event in Detroit...or even a DC event by proxy...or whatever.
The operative words are "saw" and "with" a specific person...on a specific day...when that march was held.
But this one wasn't made up of whole cloth. Lots of Mitt-isms are crafted from unicorn poots and fairy thoughts.
Wow. Off the the chart BS that means nothing. George Romney could have been MLK’s barber, chef and chauffeur and still 90% of the African Americans are voting for the Bambster.
Did Mitt Romney Lie?
Is the pope catholic?
Does a baby bear shit in the woods?
Yeah, and had Rick Perry not been ambushed by the MSM over a rock on his family's hunting ground, who knows where his true chances would have stood in the primaries. And let's face it, 90% of blacks probably wouldn't have voted for Perry, either.
But you're missing the issue.
Around the time of that rock incident, Perry's ratings further plumeted. Not among black voters, per se. But among GOP voters.
Wait til the full escalation of what the MSM has not Mitt race-wise, per the chance that Mitt is nominated, and you will see a fuller departure among...
...Independents...
...Evangelicals (toward a 3rd party -- or just not voting)
...and even also true among some conservative GOP voters...
Regardless of whether Mitt was trying to pull a fast one by alluding to the fact that his father, George Romney, marched in Detroit on the same day as King marched in Selma - Mitt didn't *see* it. Mitt wasn't there.
As Mittens explains: "I did not see it with my own eyes, but I saw him in the sense of being aware of his participation in that great effort."
I'm wrong. Total, complete, 100%, lying, Romney, horsepucky.
First I don't think Perry's ratings dropped because of a saying painted on a rock. They fell because he couldn't string a coherent thought together at a debate. He even admitted he didn't like debates and said he didn't do good at them. Big mistake.
As far as Mitt Romney as the nominee, the MSM is compiling stories about the "cult of Mormonism" like you can't imagine. Mitt will be portrayed as a member of a group that not only has multiple wives but encourages eating of babies and whatever. There hasn't been much negative coverage of Mormonism, but they are compiling and waiting.
Finally, I don't believe that Barack Obama will get as many votes from blacks in 2012. Why, because a lot of them feel like he let them down and they won't be as encouraged to go out and vote for him again. The old, "Please baby, give me one more chance" isn't going to work on a lot of blacks.
Romney has claimed that his father AND HE BOTH marched with MLK.
BOSTON GLOBE: “Mitt Romney went a step further in a 1978 interview with the Boston Herald. Talking about the Mormon Church and racial discrimination, he said: ‘My father and I marched with Martin Luther King Jr. through the streets of Detroit.’ Yesterday, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom acknowledged that was not true. ‘Mitt Romney did not march with Martin Luther King,’ he said in an e-mail statement to the Globe.”

Perry’s problem was not a rock or even being perceived as a racist. Perry fell like a rock as he seemed to call honest Americans racists when he decided to paint us as “heartless.” Perry ruined his chances when he decided conservatism meant giving things to illegals. His problem was pandering to illegals and thinking conservatives were on board with it.
I don’t think anyone took that rock silliness as serious. But what they do take seriously is having their tax money stolen and being called racists for complaining about it by someone looking for their votes. If Perry had ever understood any of that, he never would have done it. Then even his later gaffes about which dept. he would eliminate might have been ignored.
After calling Americans heartless, all the kings money, and all the kings men could not put Perry on top again.
But you are correct about Romney. The MSM and the DNC are salivating at the thought of having Mitt to run against. Every racist sounding word in the book of Mormon will be highlighted. He will have OWS hounding him every minute as the poster boy of the one per centers. Unions will be busting heads in protest over real or imagined companies that Bain gutted. His liberal past will be played up by super PACs in the South. All of the Mormon departures from Christianity will be highlighted. There will be people in Flipper suits and flip flops raised high every where you look.
The only reason we have to support Romney is that he is not Obama. I’m sure Obama’s people will play up everything Romney has done that mirrors Obama in an effort to desensitize moderates and demoralize conservatives. Romneycare, gays in the military, gay marriage, gun control, TARP, etc. etc. He will be portrayed as the white and delightsome version of Obama himself.
If Romney is the nominee, we have all that to look forward to seeing.
Thanks, I didn’t remember the 1978 Boston Herald interview. What a big fat liar he is.
They claim Romney fabricated seeing his father march with Martin Luther King, Jr. However, Mitt is not the only one with this impression.[R]esidents had reason to make a visual association between the two because Michigan television showed both leading marches, with stock footage montaged together. Thus people "saw" them marching together, consistent with the impression expressed by Romney, who was a young teenager during the 1963 March.
If it does not fit, do not vote Mitt!
