Gingrich Florida-bound after South Carolina
CNN ^ | 1-18-12 | Shepard

Easley, South Carolina (CNN) – Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he's going to Florida even if he comes in second place behind Mitt Romney in South Carolina's Saturday primary.

Asked by a reporter if Florida is "definitely a go," the presidential candidate replied: "Oh sure."

Gingrich pointed to comments made Tuesday by Republican political strategist Karl Rove, who suggested the former House speaker move on to compete in the next nominating state even if Romney beats him on Saturday.

After a town hall at Mutt's BBQ in Easley, Gingrich repeated Rove's prediction that Romney won't "just squeak out a victory" in South Carolina. [edit]

"Remember there is no poll that shows Romney beating the combination of the three conservatives. None," Gingrich added. "And it's pretty clear as you get down to one conservative that that conservative is going to have a 60-40 advantage, or 65-35 advantage over Romney. "

While a new CNN/Time/ORC International poll indicated 33% of likely South Carolina GOP primary voters would back Romney, 23% said they would support Gingrich.

The former Massachusetts governor's 10-point advantage over the former House speaker is down from a 19-point lead two weeks ago.

Drudge can twirl on his red light -and ABC can dredge away. But, given that SC is now SATURATED with brutal negative ads- I imagine those folks are inured to the Drudge sludge of an ex-wive.

Bottom line: In tomorrow’s debate- Newt has to be extremely patient- wait for his pitch- and when he gets it, he has to smack it out of the park like only Newt can---- If he can do that- get one more great sound-bite- that will carry him through of Saturday. The bat’s in Newt’s hands; the game is his to win. These establishment idiots can only watch and pray.

Incidentally, I read in the C.S.Monitor that the Times guy, Silver, who handicaps these things— said that the latest poll info he rec’d showed the momentum decidedly with Newt.

I think Gingrich was possible but shaky. But with this ex-wife thing, I think he's bye-bye.

You can't make this stuff up: three top conservative contenders up, three down in flames (the first voluntarily but a wounded warrior).

I don’t even think it will be a blip— it’s all on the debate. But, good luck to your candidate, whomever he is, my friend.

Don’t you mean after ABC helps his ex-wife put the fork in him after the debate?

I no longer have any respect for journalists and the MSM. What a bunch of Lib clowns who don’t even attempt to be objective. They are basically hired stooges working for a lesser animal. The college journo classes must have changed dramatically since I took them almost five decades ago.

VinL, I believe that you are right that after being bitten by poisonous snakes enough, your immunities get stronger. Newt can neutralize the power of millions of dollars of negative Romney ads and now the bitter interview with his ex-wife by speaking to the hearts and senses of the American people, just as he did on Monday.

I am in South Florida and have received a lie-filled negative mailer from Restore our Future about Newt, and yesterday 3 Romney love mailers. Still, Romney can’t buy credibility. One tremendous showing by Newt on Monday and another tomorrow and the Romney boat will be steady as the Costa Concordia.

Romney’s support is a mile wide and a quarter-inch thick. It is waiting to be shattered. Another credible performance on conservative American culture tomorrow and Newt really can turn this around!

Nice try . This stink bomb is not aimed at sc . It comes out after the debate . (which is criminal , Newt is not my guy but, how can he defend himself against media innuendo ? This stinks . At least send up charges the man can fight). Any way this is aimed at all of those who have no idea who Newt is . Not everyone is 60 or 70. So to the less informed this is new business . Still stinks .

Half the people in this country have an ex-wife. The other half is the ex-wives.

Ronald Reagan had an ex-wife back when people actually cared about stuff like that.

Newt will be the next president. Get used to it.

So true. They say that CNN is going to let the candidates swing away at each other with great abandonment. That should give Newt a lot of elbow room.

Hey Untwist, got side tracked by my other thread on Newt’s poll lead-— you now have some evidence for your claim on the 1/4 inch Romney support. -:)

Newt said a line on the trail yesterday that I think would be a home run in the debate if he can work it in. It was something like...

“I want to lower taxes on all Americans so that we can all pay the same low rate that Governor Romney does.”
