MARIANNE GINGRICH HAS SOMETHING TO SAY.... (from 2010)
Washington Monthly ^ | August 10, 2010 | Steve Benen

MARIANNE GINGRICH HAS SOMETHING TO SAY.... Disgraced former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) has a special kind of appreciation for marriage. Gingrich, for example, haggled over the terms of his divorce from his first wife while she was in the hospital, recovering from uterine cancer surgery. He had already proposed to his second wife before he was divorced from his first.

In the '90s, this happened again. Gingrich had an affair with a 33-year-old congressional aide -- while spearheading the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton -- and asked his third wife to marry him before he was divorced from his second.

All of this, of course, would be easier to overlook if (a) Gingrich didn't seem entirely serious about running for president in 2012; and (b) Gingrich weren't running around saying things like, "The Democratic Party has been the active instrument of breaking down traditional marriage."

The middle wife -- the one between Newt's first and third marriages -- is Marianne, who once boasted she could end Gingrich's career with a single interview. Marianne has shown remarkable restraint for over a decade, but appears to have given that interview to Esquire.

It's a very lengthy piece, but the anecdote that's likely to generate the most attention comes in her telling of the point in May 1999, soon after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, when Gingrich confessed to one of his affairs -- with a woman who was in Marianne's "apartment, eating off her plates, sleeping in her bed."

[Marianne] called a minister they both trusted. He came over to the house the next day and worked with them the whole weekend, but Gingrich just kept saying she was a Jaguar and all he wanted was a Chevrolet. " 'I can't handle a Jaguar right now.' He said that

Newt Gingrich had an epiphany. He had to, or he would have self-destructed.

As a small child he witnessed his father beating and abusing Newt’s mother. She divorced him, remarried, and Newt was adopted by his step dad. Later he was sexually molested by a high school teacher. Yeah, the first wife he married.

This man was carrying a troubled emotional burden while serving in Congress but he sought counseling, joined AA and eventually turned his life around after a religious conversion.

And you would denigrate him? Are you so perfect?

What I’ve found shocking is the enormous number of so-called Christians here at Free Republic who are nothing of the sort.

Christians are not better than other people. They forgive others, ask forgiveness for themselves, and try to lead a better life by not sinning further.

I’m not disgusted with Newt Gingrich, who I believe has honestly changed his life. I’m disgusted with the bigots who claim they are Christian but do not put it into daily practice.

“...After only four years with his Party still in power, his own members forced him out...”

Oh yeah, and many of those Republicans are still in Congress. They are part of the ongoing problem of business as usual in Washignton, D.C. Under a Republican president, they added over $3 trillion to the federal deficit, shunned conservative policy in favor of Beltway influence-peddling, and so damaged the GOP brand that we lost the majority Gingrich had worked years to forge.

Do you really think I give a damn that Newt’s fabulous colleagues think his reemergence would be a disaster for Republicans? No.

The elections of 2010 were NOT a merit promotion; the Republicans were the only alternative in town!

Newt Gingrich is pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment and loves America and understands its citizens. As a historian, he thoroughly knows the U.S. Constitution and our nation’s
history.

He allied himself with Ronald Reagan to build the Reagan Coalition, the Religious Right, and the Republican majority (together the Reagan Revolution) which directly led the downfall of the Soviet Union, the Contract with America, government reforms, less government, tax cuts, a balanced budget, and the great, long-standing Reagan economy.

Washington is broken, it doesn’t work the way it is supposed to and Newt said, if elected, he will work to change the way Washington does business. You better believe the elitists who suck money off of government contracts are
terrified he will be elected.

He knows where the bodies are buried.

He knows where the skeletons are hidden.

He knows about the hidden tract ways and byways by which influence peddling moves.

When a middle-class citizen is elected to Congress and returns home 20 years later a multi-millionaire, it is due to corruption in government. And that influence pedaling corruption may even be legal!

We have to change Washington in order to get our nation back on the right track.

Nothing you will say, which I believe is biased and flat-out wrong, has any effect on my belief that Newt Gingrich is the only candidate with true leadership ability who can and will change Washington, D.C. He isn’t perfect. Who is? But I believe at this time, at this juncture in in nation’s pathway, he can lead this country away from the abyss.

So ? in this day and age, marriage is not sacred anymore ? right ? isn’t this the message the Newt supporters are saying ? winning is more important than the sanctity of marriage.

There goes the Evangelical vote in SC and elsewhere.

Aw, they're not all Pharisees. Some of them might even be Christians.

English is one of the few languages with no formal rules. There is no final arbitor of what is “proper english” and what is not. We borrow, create, and steal words at a rate that would alarm “Le Academie”.

It is why everyone else on earth is working morning, noon, and night to learn english. In 100 years or less, English will be the world language with other languages relegated to nostalgic cultural duty, but little else.

And English has struck again,, “Crony Capitalism” has an accepted use, meaning, and has become popular. So guess what,, it is now an official english idiom,, even if it in not yet in the OED. (the bible of a minority dialect of english)

“Crony capitalism”,, use the term freely,,with joy,, with brio, like you are the honcho. Laugh at anyone who turns blue sputtering that it’s wrong,,and waves a dictionary at you as they lecture you.

How can you be "recovering from uterine cancer surgery" if you didn't have cancer?

No bias there. /s

It takes more than just saying the words to have a valid Marriage contract.

Alcoholism (mental incapacity) and abusive partnerships (coercion) can render the marriage consent null if present at the beginning of the marriage, if the marriage is not subsequently repaired.

And Carter was pious, and faithful, and a fine father,,, and the country didn't do so well!

A great family does not reliably predict a good presidency.

LOL!

Crony capitalism is like pornography: I have a hard time defining it, but I sure do know it when I see it!

You know what? I don't care.

I'm sure my ex-husband wouldn't give me a glowing review either.

No matter that he was handy with his fists, I'm sure he had good reason, was perfectly innocent of all wrong doing. As this tired old dame surely must be . . . .

“So ? in this day and age, marriage is not sacred anymore ? right ? isn’t this the message the Newt supporters are saying ? winning is more important than the sanctity of marriage.”

Sooo To forgive a man his sin means to declare marriage is not scared? I don’t think Jesus would agree with that.

I thought Jesus would forgive and help change the man who sinned as also Scared.

Look, the guy is a serial adulterer. He cannot behave and deserves whatever he gets. I know, I know, nobody thinks adultery is a big deal these days, EXCEPT GOD and people like me. We are considered prudes and biter clingers and other assorted weird things. Too bad. I agree with God on this one. The guy is an unrepentant sinner under the sway of satan

If Newt doesn’t belong in the Republican party due to past bad behavior I’d say the Republican party is dissolved because I’d suspect all but you (apparently) have exhibited bad behavior.
