WOW! Even John Le Carre could not make up this stuff.
Holy heck! What a story! Is Marianne Gingrich Jewish?
One pertinent quote from your link :
David Yerushalmi, who says he hired both Mrs. Gingrich and Ash, disputes Mrs. Gingrichs allegation that there was tension between them.
As Marianne Gingrich tells it, she did not expect her job back at the IEDC if Soghanalian made the $10 million investment because she was already too busy
working with Newt on his book projects. I let him attend a meeting by himself on one of the book deals, and he left more money in that meeting than I would have made in a year working at the export zone. I decided then and there Newt needed me to handle these things.
Mrs. Gingrich made clear that throughout their marriage money was an issue. We were so pressed he could not even set aside money for congressional retirement until 1991. Living on his paycheck was very, very hard Newt was like a child when it came to handling money, she says.
Whoa to it all
Very good reporting. I read the entire thing. And since I have experience in international trade I was interested to read it in detail as I know the personality types.
But I think Speaker Gingrich would have been quick to see that they were asking for a lift in the Embargo in exchange for an investment or donation or such, and he would have avoided it because he knew it was risky.
There are certain protocols to follow in politics to be able to survive. But still there are situations of unexpected entrapment or disastrous associations. Speaker Gingrich was surviving the most intense assaults from Dems in Congress. Your linked report shows the Clinton Justice Department was likewise politically motivated to nail Newt at all costs. Because they dropped it as soon as they realized the impeachment of Clinton would render Newt as the power in Washington.
That Newt survived the mud and stink inside the District of Corruption and is still standing to inspire people of his vision of America and to articulate Conservative values shows he has grit and courage. I think we need him as President.
Marianne who was apparently later diagnosed with MS is sore at her former husband because he was needing her to be an active partner and she didn’t have it in her to keep up with him, that much is clear from her quotes in the writeup at your link, e.g. “She let him attend a book deal on his own”, why alone? etc.
I think Marianne’s sour grapes will not deter Newt from winning the Presidency. Too many of us have shared the tribulations of money problems, difficult spouses, demanding responsibilities and so on. We are no longer Puritans but we Conservatives still believe in liberty and that is what is important.
I find Marianne to be an unsympathetic character independent of my bias now for Newt because she is reported to say now that “she doesn’t believe he should be President”. Whether or not someone is or has been close to Newt Gingrich I have to ask such people the question “as opposed to whom? Obama? Romney?” Because she would say such a thing shows her grievance is petty unless she had incontrovertible evidence that he was a pedophile or a spy for Al Queda etc. In other words, she has nothing.

What I gather from that account of arms dealing is that Newt Gingrich never did anything wrong, and everything else is innuendo and any investigation was stopped as being inappropriate during a democratic administration.
Is throwing out old unsupported suspicions, probably politically motivated, enough to kill a presidential campaign?
It would depend on how dramatically they were presented, I suppose.
