I have had the pleasure of singing along with that song on more than one occasion. Kinky is currently getting ready to embark on his "Southern Discomfort Tour" throughout the South. Definitely a great opportunity to see a living American Original, and Kinky is much more conservative than you might imagine.
Oh! I didn’t even notice your screen name. So, I’m hanging around the Kerrville Folk Festival, many many years ago, and I’m backstage because I’m on staff, just hanging around, and there’s this swarthy looking, kinda grizzled fella, chewin’ on a cigar, and I, for some reason, ask him if he’s Flaco Jimenez, the Tejano accordian artist. He thanks me for the compliment but says he has nothing of the talent that Flaco has. Then he sticks out his hand and says “I’m Kinky Friedman, from Kerrville, Texas”. This was when he was running for sheriff of Kerr County. We had a nice chat.
Another time we had seen him at Antones, down on the drag in Austin, and we came out, got in the car and headed down the drag, pulled up at the first light and there’s Kinky, in a fine western-style suit, grey felt hat, cigar in hand, behind the wheel of an ENORMOUS Cadillac convertible with horns on the front and two hot chicks riding shotgun.
Everything Kinky does, he does big.
