If Mitch Daniels runs for POTUS in 2016, maybe he wants Jerry Sandusky as his, ummmm, running mate. Hence, Daniels’ call for a “truce on social issues,” and these license plates.

Oh! I didn’t even notice your screen name. So, I’m hanging around the Kerrville Folk Festival, many many years ago, and I’m backstage because I’m on staff, just hanging around, and there’s this swarthy looking, kinda grizzled fella, chewin’ on a cigar, and I, for some reason, ask him if he’s Flaco Jimenez, the Tejano accordian artist. He thanks me for the compliment but says he has nothing of the talent that Flaco has. Then he sticks out his hand and says “I’m Kinky Friedman, from Kerrville, Texas”. This was when he was running for sheriff of Kerr County. We had a nice chat.

Another time we had seen him at Antones, down on the drag in Austin, and we came out, got in the car and headed down the drag, pulled up at the first light and there’s Kinky, in a fine western-style suit, grey felt hat, cigar in hand, behind the wheel of an ENORMOUS Cadillac convertible with horns on the front and two hot chicks riding shotgun.

Everything Kinky does, he does big.

Shouldn't the background of that plate be brown?

That old song "Indiana wants me" has new meaning.

Even that is an understatement! The man is a true American Original. He is a very brilliant and fascinating man. I am currently in pre-production for Becoming Kinky, a play by Ted Swindley about the life and times of Kinky Friedman. The man is a modern day Will Rogers. Kinky says all politicians should serve two terms; one in office and one in prison :)

PS-I hope to attend the Kerrville Folk Festival one of these years. It is definitely one of the most respected songwriter gatherings in the country. I bet it was wonderful to be there working the festival.

In one sense, I felt that Staff was a way in which anybody that wanted to come to the festival could do so, even if they didn’t have any money. You got festival admission with camping, a t-shirt every day or two, beer tickets, meal tickets, and maybe even a couple of bucks, I don’t quite remember. To get on staff, you needed to come to at least one “work weekend” in the weeks leading up to the festival, which were little party weekends in themselves, WONDERFUL, having the whole ranch practically to yourself. Again, you were fed, taken care of, a lot of fun. I started on the Sanitation crew, and later graduated to security. It was a blast. Lots of hippies, I gotta warn you there, but it’s deep in the heart of Texas, lots of hard-eyed cowboys there too.

The beauty of Austin used to be that it was the place where the rednecks and the hippies found a way to get along. Now I think it’s a leftist infested hell hole that needs a good fumigation.

I fake folks out all the time.Cool Conservatives are such a rare breed we are often mistaken for hippies. The Crab-@** get-off-my-lawn GOPers are often the standard bearer for the party and give Freedom Lovers a bad name.

We-el, just because a man wears his hair long, it don't make'im a hippieh. If he participates in drum circles though, that does. I believe the Kerrville Folk Festival bans drums as a matter of policy. It used to be no drugs, no dogs, no dijiridoos. I think drums were added to that - too obnoxious to other campers. And the prohibition on drugs was honored mostly in the breach, though you could get in trouble, especially if you were burning one in public.
