The problem is the same problem everywhere, what happens when a guy is attacking you with his fists? Luckily, our laws allow for lethal force against (paraphrasing I think) severe physical harm.

In a case where there is severe disparity of force, for example muscular young man against elderly woman, where the man has the ability to beat the victim to death, deadly force can (in theory) be used. Same deal applies where it's many against one. Your mileage may vary.
