SUMTER, S.C. Presidential candidates hear tales of woe all the time on the campaign trail. But rarely does one respond by pulling cash out of his back pocket to help a struggling voter pay her bills.
Mitt Romney did just that here Saturday night, according to ABC News. When a 55-year-old woman, Ruth Williams, who said she lost her job last October, approached the Republican presidential front-runner on the rope line following a campaign rally in Sumter, he gave her what an aide later said was about $50 or $60.
It did not appear that the exchange was caught on camera, but ABCs off-air reporter, Emily Friedman, witnessed it and interviewed Williams afterward. Williams told Friedman that she has been volunteering at Romneys Columbia, S.C., campaign offices and has been following his campaign since first spotting his campaign bus on Wednesday.
I was on the highway praying and said, God, tell me how to get [my] lights on, Williams, apparently referring to her electricity bill, told Friedman. I pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there. And then God said, Follow the bus, and I followed the bus.

He did it to get media coverage. He was doing HIMSELF a "good" deed.
He could have given her assistance privately; it isn't like she just showed up out of the blue.
OH MY GOD! What a false panderer! Is there no level so low as Romney would stoop to pick up a couple of votes?
I bet he had at least $1,000 in his back pocket and gave this “poor potential voter” only a pittance.
I bet he felt good and had a really good nights sleep over this while having a warm, fuzzy feeling.
What a fake and false person he is.
He did a good deed and hes still slammed for it.
Romney only thinks of Romney and no one else.
Would you all be saying the same thing if Sarah Palin had done this?
This was NOT a good deed. It was a panhandler brushoff. A good deed would have been an aide looking into her bills and working with her to design an income strategy. THAT would have been a good deed.
Handing her 50 bucks was a particularly ignorant, brazen and outrageously elitist dismissal of the woman's problems.
YES!
Sarah Palin would not hand out cash like it was pennies thrown to beggars. She would talk with the woman, get to know about her circumstances and look into help that would make a difference. You betcha.
Everyone is speculating how cold and calculating the actions in the story are.
Maybe it WAS a spur of the moment thing. If he was so calculating, he would realize that he will be plagued with requests for money.
I’m not real enamored with Mitt.
But it is sure looking like he will be the nominee. I know he isn’t yet and doesn’t HAVE to be.
So.
Based on the virulence of some of these comments, what are y’all gonna do? Refuse to vote for him?
Assure Zero finishes his rape and destruction of us/US? I’m getting a little sore, myself.
I’m not presuming that this politically tin-eared, conservatively challenged (as in NOT) candidate will get the nomination and I am doing all that I can to show why he’s a loser — before Obama shows us what we know in our hearts, Romney won’t win.
I agree. Not to toot my own horn but there have been a few (way too few) moments in my life when I have spontaneously given something away whether money or a coat or an umbrella. Whether this was staged or not is between him and his HP and maybe his handlers. We’ll never know. I prefer to think the best of people based upon their observable behavior in the present day.
And whose bus will God tell her to follow next month to keep the lights on?
Reminds me of something my dad would do. I don’t see what the big deal its not like he paid her a huge amount of money but he did do the right thing in helping her out. He did not do it live on camera.
Ping and double ping. Right out of the Marxist neighborhood organizer playbook.
They call it “walkin’ around money”.
Romney has become a sickening caricature of himslef.
No problem, it is from his Bane Cap profits.
It is arresting to imagine a Romney White House, inevitably filled with as many former Bain colleagues as each of his other public ventures have been: The PowerPoints, the 80-20 jargon, the clinical separation of decision-making from ideology, the detachment of those decisions from moral consequence, a persistent blind spot for people as people. It would represent the final ascension of a perfectly American type, one that has already remade the culture of business. I once asked a Bain colleague of Romneys how Romney thought of his own core competence. I think Mitt thinks hes good at being Mitt Romney, the colleague said.
Romney got payments from the govt?
Palinistas are so predictable. They can always tell you exactly what Palin would do in a situation. Except that they did miss that thing about her ‘definitely’ running for president.
(She’s running!!) What a joke.
12/22/11 Romney says he wont release tax returns
1/11/12 Palin urges Romney to Release Tax Returns, Provide Proof he Created 100,000 Jobs at Bain Capital
But an ABC reporter "just happened" to witness it.
....”Among the insiders who received the no-strings-attached cash were Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Deutsche Bank AG, Merrill Lynch, Societe Generale, Calyon, Barclays Plc, Rabobank, Danske, HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland, Banco Santander, Morgan Stanley, Wachovia, Bank of America, and Lloyds Banking Group.
Federal Election Commission campaign finance reports shows Romney banked over $798,000 from employees of TARP recipients....”
