KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.
"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.
Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

TE, I read how you are living with your mom, taking care of her now. God Bless you. I’ve been there, helped care for my Dad until he died and then my Mom who lived with us once she couldn’t live on her own (her choice, we wanted them to live with us forever, lol but they refused until they had to. Very independent people). It’s incredibly hard and incredibly wonderful at the same time. I’m glad I was able to do it for my parents and I’m glad my children were able to experience it. Yup, define all you want...you and I both know the difference. You just won’t admit it.
Know this, Social Security, FICA, is outside the Constitution. So is just about everything else in Govt these days. That includes just about everything other than Defense, State, Treasury, Justice. It is time to abolish ALL of the things that are unconstitutional. And since IRS is a foreign owned corporation, and not a part of Treasury, its activities and the individual federal income tax are also unconstitutional.
So, what else is new? As they say, "Think you can trust your government, ask an Indian."
I like Santorum. He’s a good man. He’s a good Catholic. I know this personally. Also, he’s my third choice, behind Perry and Gingrinch, as the repub nom. He can’t win nationally, imo. Not yet, anyway. If he’s the nom, I’ll support him/vote for him but I won’t in the primary if I have the two other choices.
I think he’s finished because he mentioned a sacred cow to both dems and repubs...don’t even think about SS decreases and for heavens sakes never actually say it. Even if it’s the right thing, it won’t play well across the board/nationally.

OK, how about this... I retired and got retirement insurance with United Healthcare from the company I worked for. It was relativity inexpensive $200 a month for my spouse and I. It was the same policy I had at work.
Once I my spouse and I went on medicare, medicare became the primary insurer, and my retirement healthcare became secondary. That means that even though I still have my retirement insurance (and at the same price), medicare pays 80% and my personal insurance pays 90% of the 20% that medicare doesn’t cover.
I checked into this, and found that if your in a group of 50 or more, that’s the law. If your in a group under 50, your small group in the primary. So big companies get a break and the taxpayer picks it up...
This kind of crap can be changed and should be changed.
And of those three you mentioned only Defense is Constitutional. IMO, don’t touch Defense/Military, don’t decrease funds for it and if anything increase funds. Our military, especially the enlisted, get the least when they should get the most Gut the rest.

Consider the source, of course. But that strikes me as a significant reason to favor Santorum.

I don’t believe that the greedy seniors would not agree to give the younger folks an option to opt out of Soshecurity and invest in mutual funds!
I own my stake in the mutual funds investment, just as I own my stake in the Soshecurity that has been confiscated from me and my employers, the same way totalitarian regimes do such things.
Instead of blaming greedy seniors, blame your stupid grandparents for allowing FDR to create this system.
Don’t worry, if they’re smart, your grandchildren will blame you, and rightly so, for Obamacare, which like Soshecurity, Dodd-Frank and Sarbox ain’t going nowhere. We’ll get used to them, like we got used to Soshecurity. Obamao has known it. No major legislation ever gets rescinded in this banana republic. It’s not like we freed ourselves from totalitarian oppression like some Estonians did.

Thanks for your kind words and I agree with your comments about Santorum and your candidates. You are also correct that it is not good election politics to mention social security.
However, I give Santorum props for mentioning it even though it is certainly a tactical error. We need someone who will tell us the truth. Sadly, even if that person had the inspirational manner of Ronald Reagan they would probably be a one term proposition in our current environment.
I have respect for anyone who takes care of their parents or elders and truly believe that we would be a better nation if more people chose this. It pains me that our society tells older parents to struggle on their own instead of contributing to their legacy - grandchildren.
I have known many elderly people and was often saddened by how lonely some were. I remember thinking that one would really enjoy the company of another. It would also help them financially.
I think that should be part of the discussion. When you add up all the bills and cut that in half it’s much easier to make a small check go further!

Yep, same thing happened with my parents. They had a primary insurance (american postal workers, and no they weren’t postal workers but were able to get into the insurance plan many years ago). They paid into it, premiums, etc. Once they qualified for Medicare, that was it...medicare became the primary insurance even though they had private insurance with American Postal Workers. My parents kept telling me about this but I didn’t realize it until I took over their care, including medical care. I learned it was the Law. Medicare, whether they wanted it or not, was their primary and their private insurance was their secondary.
Whenever they needed some kind of medical care, and I’d be told that medicare doesn’t cover it, I’d say well they have private insurance, bill them for heavens sakes. You are right. Don’t worry though... Obamacare will make it worse and if it is implemented your company will probably dump the insurance. $200 bucks is a very good deal.

I am pretty confident you can place the blame on those who voted in the great depression...... the 1965 vote that placed the revenue in the general fund would be a nice place to assign some blame as well.
The rest of us have failed to make the hard decisions and sacrifice. It’s easier to kick the can.
As long as you keep it polished to a high sheen no one will notice the tilt and may even think it quite stylish. ;^)
