Santorum: Trim Social Security now even if painful

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.

"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.

Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

Reality has hit me like a freight train FRiend as a widower at age 32. Life throws challenges to everyone and I know everyone has difficulties.

I did not realize your mom had alzheimers and bless you many times over for caring for her. We went through that with my grandfather and it was extraordinarily difficult. There were many of us and I don’t underestimate the toll it would take on a single person but appreciate what it means to you.

May God bless and keep the both of you and may you emerge stronger for the experience.

Social Security is not alone in running a deficit. The entire Federal Government is running a deficit. If Social Security must be cut, so should all Federal Retirement programs including Congress and the Military. Same rules and cuts for all.

Actually, she sounds a lot like the people who roll out the anecdotes about illegal immigrants living in squalor, the poor paraplegics living in a shambles of an apartment on SSDI, etc.

I don't intend this comparison as an insult, and I am not disputing the facts of the matter. My point is quite different. Every group receiving government money, including those groups that the people here want cut off, has a file-case full of those anecdotes. That's how the programs got started in the first place.

I would like to believe that they do so out of misplaced idealism, but the cynic in me says they do so because the horror stories work. Those stories make would-be cutter back off hard. If you guys put pressure on the politicians to prune SSDI, etc., the liberals will not only roll out their parade of horror stories but also will cast you guys as hypocrites. They'll drag out that now-notorious protestor with the "Keep Your Government Hand Off My Medicare" sign.

Sorry to say, but you're caught in a trap. The "you first - no, you first" trap.

Complain all you want about the welfare cheats and illegal immigrants, but complaining won't change the optics. Drawing distinctions, however true, won't either. The fact is, any politican who tries to get the budget under control will successfuly be pegged as either a heartless cruel brute or someone who's not living in the real world. Successfully.

My only suggestion at this point is, pray that the politicians who eventually are forced to make cuts (a la Greece) are Democrats.

Okay, so what did you call the product if not “vacuum cleaner” ?

" Sorry, but most Freepers are Boomers and many like me are already collecting S/S. Your ideas won't play well here. Maybe the freepers who are not Boomers should start their own FR auxiliary site? "

What ever happen to the cries for smaller government then ?

No, but that made me laugh as I just read some of my own rambling. I am just a tired guy who worked far too many hours this week that has been reading our founding fathers. I guess the prose sticks with you!

You sure have done a lot of complaining about just that.

One of the cornerstones of conservatism is self-reliance and individualism. That does not mean that we live our lives as hermits and fail to enjoy one of the most special parts of humanity - the connections with others. Again, social security is not a replacement for that and if people can’t maintain their own household they should find other options before the government borrows on the backs of my children.

Throughout this thread, there are numerous persons who illustrate their dependence on government. A government that has shirked it’s constitution, looted the treasury, and placed an immoral burden on my children. I have been voting for well over two decades and assume you have been voting longer than that. I realize that our candidates do not always win but we still must shoulder our own burdens and not shackle future generations with them. That is conservatism and the moral choice.

You can’t have it both ways.

It is, as I stated earlier, likely a purposeless argument that passes the time and satisfies our insomnia. This government and many state and local governments give me no reason to believe that we will restore discipline and fiscal sanity in the next decade. At the rate we are printing and borrowing money, as well as the numerous fiscal disasters we face in the near future, I have concluded that they will print money until that money is worthless. That way, those responsible can honor their promises despite the dire consequences.

I don’t just write about it. I acted on it. I moved my young family onto a farm. When that day comes when my paycheck does not go as far, I will have plenty to feed my family and help others. When our family or friends have no place to live they are welcome here. We will just make the garden bigger.

Social Security is simply one broken part of our government and culture. It allowed the government to take money today because some believed there would always be more money tomorrow. That is not true. Social Security is only as good as the government that guarantees it and that government is now 16 trillion dollars in debt and it grows worse each day with no sign of change. In my opinion, the likely outcome will be continual inflation. I hope I am wrong and my efforts will amount to nothing more than a hobby. However, if even one of my children or grandchildren benefits from the experience in the future it will all be worth it.

I would shoulder any burden if it meant my children would not have to bear it. It’s a shame, and rather un-conservative in my mind, that more people don’t feel the same. Was’nt that feeling the stimulus for the Tea Party?

Regardless, Goodnight and God bless!

" If he said the opposite, the Santorum bashers on here would be whining "This is an example why he's NOT a fiscal conservative. Newt is sooooooooo much better on cutting government!!" .......

Amazing, how about that..... they believe a lie and want Santorum out of the race because they think their guy ( S ) who are not doing so well should stay in...

Flip Flopers... first they want cutting the government, but bash Santorum for being a big government politician, and now ? when they get the news that he want's to cut government, they cry foul....

The hypocrisy is rich and thick on this thread...

" Do you realize that Santorum has no intention of reducing the benefits of 75 and 80 year olds? Try reading the entire story for goodness sakes. "

They can't read beyond their Newt/Perry colored glasses.... blinders on....

" And you, my friend, are a jerk.

And if you agree with Santorum on immediate changes to benefits currently being received by the elderly, you have no idea of the chaos that would be created.

I’ve said I’m all for phasing it out, protecting those who are on it now and about to be but for those under 55 there should be changes.

If you support Santorum on this, you are in a deluded minority. "

Well, well, well, one would have thought that you were once for small government and cutting government.....

Social Security is socialism not matter how you cut it....
It's taken from many and given to few.... it's another TAX.... a TAX for the government for it's own use and they give you what " THEY " deem what you should get... it's not a retirement plan and anyone who relies on Social Security as their retirement is a fool..

Remember, it was these seniors who voted for this sh!t for 50 years that caused our current mess.

How about cutting this crap first before cutting SS
The average American hasn’t a clue how much of our tax money Obama has sent down Muslim sh*t holes while he threatens to slash the military, cut medicare and withold senior’s social security checks!

BILLIONS FOR JIHAD!

Obamas 2009 Supplemental Appropriations for Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Pandemic Flu was revised and passed by the full committee.
It gives billions http://creepingsharia.wordpress.com/2009/05/1...
of U.S. taxpayer dollars to countries and entities that support Sharia law and/or harbor, hide and support those who want to destroy the U.S. and our allies.
Read the summary from David Obeys office that was quietly released last week with nary a word from any media.

$3.6 billion, matching the request, to expand and improve capabilities of the Afghan security forces

$400 million, as requested, to build the counterinsurgency capabilities of the Pakistani security forces

Afghanistan:$1.52 billion,$86 million above the request

West Bank and Gaza:$665 million in bilateral economic, humanitarian, and security assistance for the West Bank and Gaza

Jordan:$250 million,$250 million above the request, including $100 million for economic and $150 million for security assistance

Egypt:$360 million,$310 million above the request, including $50 million for economic assistance,$50 million for border security, and $260 million for security assistance

Pakistan:$1.9 billion,$591 million above the request

Iraq:$968 million,$336 million above the request

Oversight:$20 million,$13 million above the request, to expand oversight capacity of the State Department, USAID, and the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan to review programs in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq
Lebanon:$74 million

International Food Assistance:$500 million,$200 million above the request, for PL 480 international food assistance to alleviate suffering during the global economic crisis

Refugee Assistance:$343 million,$50 million above the request, including humanitarian assistance for Gaza. Funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency programs in the West Bank and Gaza is limited to $119 million (Note: Gaza = Hamas)

Disaster Assistance:$200 million to avert famines and provide life-saving assistance during natural disasters and for internally displaced people around the world, including Somalia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, the Middle East and South Asia

Peacekeeping:$837 million for United Nations
peacekeeping operations, including an expanded mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and a new mission in Chad and the Central African Republic

Department of Justice:$17 million, matching the request, for counter-terrorism activities and to provide training and assistance for the Iraqi criminal justice system
Obama gives your tax dollars to rebuild Muslim mosques around the world
http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/... #

ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION WILL GIVE AWAY NEARLY $6 MILLION OF AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS TO RESTORE 63 HISTORIC AND CULTURAL SITES, INCLUDING ISLAMIC MOSQUES AND MINARETS, IN 55 NATIONS. See the State Department document here.
http://exchanges.state.gov/media/pdfs/office-...

And THAT’S just the tip of the iceberg.
THIS will blow your mind!!

They should have 2010 up, but they don’t. That’s where you’ll find Obama’s largesse towards Muslim countries really go off the charts.

" It’s a system instituted by the government and forced on us."

Thank you, you just admitted it....

It's government socialism.... BIG GOVERNMENT .

It's a government TAX program no matter how you look at it.
They take from the many and give to the few,, and they give you what THEY deem what you should get.
When government is running it ? It's NOT a retirement program.
It's just like unemployment with another name, just like welfare..

" I had high hopes for Santorum, but in this case I'm afraid he wanted to show that he can make the tough and painful decisions, instead showed that he can make the easy and dumb decisions. "

The " Let's cut government, but not MY slice of the pie crowd " ..... guess what ? ALL of us are going to have to endure some pain in cutting the government budget.... stop crying about it.....
Those who are against what Rick Santorum proposes ( if true from this article ) then stop saying you want to cut government, and stop bashing Rick Santorum for being a " BIG GOVERNMENT " politician....
The hypocrisy is rich and thick in this thread...
