KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.
"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.
Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

"That's as good as money sir, those are IOUs."
I heard a Santorum speech in Scranton in 2000. Believe me, he knows the issue indide out. Let’s take a breath and see what transpires in the weekend debates. Bob
Oh please, you sound as hysterical as the Democrats who are always saying things like “Republicans want to poison your drinking water, or kill grandpa.”
So what happens to the seniors living on SS who just barely pay their bills? You have avoided any rational answer to that for many posts now.
You didn’t answer the question; what happens to the people like the lady I described? Just let her die?
(somehow I’m beginning to believe some of you would do just that.)
Do those seniors have kids, who have the means to assist?
Many don’t. Like my mother.
What makes you think Santorum’s plan would result in anything like that happening?
Look, the reason why we’ll never get any cuts in Washington, is because everytime somebody proposes it, we’ll get bombarded with sob stories, so the Leviathan just grows and keeps growing.
So take your kids or grandkids out of public school and stop stealing from your neighbors.
My kids don’t go to public school but I pay substantial amount each year in property tax to support the local schools. I chose to live here and knew that when I purchased the buildings and land. I was blessed to marry a teacher and she is homeschooling them. I am confident they will get a good education, have a solid moral foundation, and understand the Constitution.
I traded the American dream for the country life but I am still close enough to my work in the city. After much prayer and consideration we decided that it was more important for our children to know how to farm and be self-sufficient than it was to score a bazillion on a video game. As the old saying goes... I am teaching my kids to fish.
It’s not for everyone but it was right for us. Our society is so addicted to the things that don’t matter that we spend today and give little thought to tomorrow. The government makes it easy to do that because they have made promises.
Social Security was a promise by politicians and I think they will make good on their promise. However, each year the promised funds will be worth less. You will get your check FRiend but it won’t buy much. That is the nation my children will inherit.
I do have sympathy for those who must have social security. My grandmother is one of those but I still help pay her bills even though she is over 2100 miles away. Truth be told, she would be better off if she moved in with my parents or me because she can’t afford to maintain her home and property on her monthly check. For some reason she must maintain her independence, so she sits alone in an empty home when she could sit in her rocker surrounded by the sounds of her grandchildren and the love of her family. She could finish her days with new memories and leave an impression on her family but that is not what our culture teaches or wants anymore.
Where did we lose sight of that and why? Where did we lose the concept of family and all that it could mean? With so many households with two working parents why are grandparents not in the picture? I think we would be better off if this was normal.
Our government created social security and now it is a necessity for most. This President gave us Obamacare using the same argument - the latest necessity that we will never afford.....
Do you ever wonder how inflation will factor into all of this?
This man in 1783 understood social security better than we do today -
“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants. It is the creed of slaves.” William Pitt in the House of Commons November 18, 1783
Probably this...
Ryan and others have said a phased-in change would give Americans time to plan their retirements without surprises. But Santorum says those officials are seeking political cover by delaying their proposed changes."That's why you see Paul Ryan saying, 'Oh, I'm going to fix Social Security, I'm going to fix Medicare in 10 years,'" Santorum told a crowd Thursday in Northfield, N.H.
He said Ryan assumes, "well, if you're under 55, you won't be paying much attention, right? Well, the problem is, this is not a problem that we can wait 10 years to solve."
Well supposedly, public education benefits us all, but of course with the current state of public schools, I question that.
IOWs you have no answer to the question.
As I said, this lady my family assists is ALONE- as many of our senior are.
Either they have no children or the children are unable or unwilling to help them.
ANSWER THE QUESTION; WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO, CUT THEIR MEAGER SS AND JUST LET ‘EM ROLL OVER AND DIE WHILE ILLEGAL ALIENS SUCK THIS COUNTRY DRY AND OMUSLIM SENDS BILLIONS DOWN ISLAMIC SH*T HOLES?
I’m turning in. I’m sick of arguing with heartless people
Sure. With lower SS payment and inflation my mother will definitely be out on the street in three or four year's time. I'm glad you're not taking those Fed tax dollars to school your children. My mother has also paid loads of property taxes for our schools too although she hasn't had any kids in school for over forty years.
I don’t know what will happen ok, you say they will die, but I have more faith that human beings are more resourceful than that, and will find a way to manage.
LOL That’s the funniest answer yet. “Something will happen!”
Why would your mother be out in the street if you still have a roof over your head?
Where did we get this so wrong?????
Why do other cultures have children who grow up under the watchful eye of parents and grandparents when our culture teaches grandparents “not to intrude” and everyone must have their own home and privacy?
I wish my grandmother would move in with us. We could use the help with three young children and I think it would make her final days (she is in her 90’s) much more meaningful.
All I know is that this thread has made me realize why we’ll never have smaller government in this country.
Because the bills couldn't be paid. The home would have to be sold and that would cover about four years in an assisted living home.
