Clearing the place out? Shooting him in the leg? Are you utterly stupid? If they suspect that it is a firearm in a school, you do NOT have hundreds of kids filing past a loaded firearm. You also do NOT shoot a gunman in the leg, and allow him to start killing people while he remains there, in pain and now under the most intense fight-or-flight response.

“Sounds like the hall was already cleared and since the doors were locked, they were safe. It’s not like he could have shot the locks off or injured them in any way.”
1. The only one that knew for sure the gun was not a real one would have been the perp.
2. The police responded in a logical fashion based on what they knew before they got there, and what they saw when they showed up.

Well, he obviously wouldn’t have tried to shoot the locks out, would he? He didn’t have a hostage, did he? What would have happened if they just set up at either end of the empty hall behind cover, and waited?
