Back in the early 60s a buddy and I had very real looking plastic guns that shot rubber tipped darts. The barrel had a bright red tip. It took us about 30 seconds with a marker to paint them black. Never had a run in with the law, though.
First, we pulled the rubber safety suction cups off the darts. Then we found that you could load the dart and them pull it out and replace it with a pencil. For some reason, both of us still have our eyes.
LOL I had 3 sons and it still amazes me they arrived at adulthood with all of their appendages intact. The thing I hated the most is when they ran into the house with a hand over their eye because my first thought was always, “They have put their eye out and this is going to be grosser than usual!”
I guess kids were smarter back then. As you said, you survived with both your eyes, and there were evil Easy Bake ovens and chemistry kits and other things that would be not allowed now. And somehow, the kids survived and thrived.
