MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Struggling to reverse a slide in his standing, Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich said Sunday he'd been "Romney-boated" in Iowa and suggested his GOP rival would buy the presidency if he could.
The sharp words against Mitt Romney, a multimillionaire many times over who is in strong contention to win Iowa, come two days before voters here weigh in on the Republican field. It was part of a stepped-up effort by Gingrich to contrast himself with Romney, and the candidate said he would adopt an even more aggressive strategy when the race moves to New Hampshire, the former Massachusetts governor's backyard.
Gingrich's nautical attack was a reference to a 2004 TV ad campaign by a group called the "Swiftboat Veterans for Truth" that bloodied Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry. This year, Gingrich has faced an onslaught of negative TV advertisements by a group aligned with Romney.
Asked Sunday whether he felt that he had been "swiftboated," Gingrich replied, "I feel Romney-boated."
It was his second swipe of the day at the Republican frontrunner.
Speaking to reporters after attending morning Mass at the St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Gingrich said the amount Romney will eventually spend on his various campaigns will rival the spending of billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has poured at least $261 million of his own money into his mayoral campaigns.
"Romney would buy the election if he could," Gingrich said.
A new Des Moines Register poll put Gingrich in fourth place, after leading the field a few weeks ago.

That's just an outright lie.
What is really clear as crystal is that you will go to great lengths (and loads of unnecessary words) to buttress the AP/lib spin.
Your only position on this thread is the AP/lib-spin position.
This is my last comment on the matter. I will happily ignore anything else you have to say, since you do not display any reasonable interest in discussion.
You cannot recognize even my simplest statements, you have to distort everything into your own twisted agenda.
My interest on this thread has been to DEFEND the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth against persistent MSM distortions. I was irritated that Newt cooperated with that MSM agenda in a way that is slanderous to the SBVFT.
How you can pretend that my utter condemnation of the entire “Swiftboating” meme is any endorsement of “AP/lib-spin” is simply nonsensical.
I am condemning all attempts to continue the lib smears of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth.
You obviously either don’t know or don’t care anything about that history.
I am not *endorsing* any AP/lib-spin on Gingrich, I am merely pointing out the thumpingly obvious (to nearly all but you): that Gingrich played right into the hands of the MSM spin machine (as evidenced by the headline and content of the article).
What they did with his comments was utterly, transparently predictable.
Because I point out that Newt should have anticipated how this would be mis-used to perpetuate the false “Swiftboating” meme, you pretend that I am *endorsing* what the MSM does.
That is beyond asinine.
I’m speaking from the precept of “know your enemy” (lib meda) — stating that Newt usually knows the media games very well — but in this case HE (not me) served that AP/lib-spin agenda very nicely for them.
Why you persist is distorting and misunderstanding my comments is your problem not mine.
You are one of the 2-3 worst posters I’ve ever dealt with on FR and I don’t wish to talk with you again.
So let’s please ignore each other from now on.
“Romney Boated” was being used as a pejorative term. The obvious implication was that being “boated” was a bad / underhanded type of thing.
He wasn’t paying Romney a compliment when he compaired him to the Swift Boat Vets.
Bull.
He didn't. That's ignorant propaganda. He did the exact opposite.
I know all about it. I have fought it every inch of the way. It is history now. All you are doing is trying to lay the blame for it on Gingrich.
How would you know you didn't even bother to listen to them? You took what the AP said as gospel without checking. Then you condescendingly dismissed the idea that you should listen to the actual exchange.
Ignore you? I will post to you any time I feel like it. Although your incredibly verbose ramblings are tedious in their emptiness so I certainly don’t look forward to your responses.
