An Arizona couple has been arrested for allegedly posting photos of their two young children bound by duct tape and, in one photo, hanging one of the children upside down from exercise equipment.
Kayla Almunia, 19, and Frankie Almunia, 20, told police that the images were meant as a joke, but authorities arent laughing.
I dont know how anyone can rationalize or believe that this behavior is in any way funny or a joke, Coconino County Sheriffs Commander Rex Gilliland told ABCNews.com. Law enforcement believes that this is an act of child abuse.
In the photos, the 2-year-old and 10-month-old are allegedly bound with duct tape around their wrists and ankles. Their mouths were also closed shut with duct tape. Police said one of the children was hung upside down on an exercise apparatus.
Police say Kayla Almunia allegedly posted the photos on Facebook on Wednesday night. Soon after, an anonymous caller reported the images to the police and provided authorities with the couples names and address.
Gilliland said police obtained 10 photos from Kayla Almunias cell phone of the bound children. All of the photos appeared to have been taken at the same time.
While police said there were no indications that the children had possibly been abused in other ways, the bondage appeared to be traumatic.
In one photo, the child did appear to be extremely frightened and fearful and in a later one appeared to be crying, Gilliland said.
The children were initially taken into custody by Child Protective Services but have since been released to what police deemed to be suitable family members, Gilliland said.
Gilliland said that the anonymous tipster is the person to thank in this case and encourages others to be similarly vigilant.
We encourage people to pay attention..."

Public educators resent the fact that homeschoolers make them look bad without all the wasted time and money on useless teaching degrees.
Since they can’t argue against homeschoolers’ success, they attack them any way they can, and that’s generally by trying to destroy their credibility through personal attacks.
You know, liberal fighting tactics from those indoctrination centers most people send their kids to.
Well, YOU’RE the one who brought homeschooling into it out of the blue for no other reason than to take a pot shot at homeschoolers.
We can see that there’s more behind that than you’re claiming.
I am pretty sure that you should not be calling someone a liar in open forum.
Can you tell me honestly that these two should be homeschooling?
“Public educators resent the fact that homeschoolers make them look bad without all the wasted time and money on useless teaching degrees.”
Whatever the intent of FReeper verga - this deserves repeating.
I’m am so proud of my daughters. They are the perfect combination of book-smarts and common-sense. They shoot straight too ;^)
thread devolution ping...
After the irrelevant comment by verga I just assumed he/she/it was a shill for public education. It’s the typical response by public education union shills to slam homeschooling even when it’s not part of the topic. Nothing new under the sun.
Where did the article mention that they were planning on homeschooling?
Since the vast majority of people in this country still send their kids to public indoctrination centers, why does the question even come up?
Congratulations on a job well done.
We owe many thanks to you and the homeschool ping list, metmom. To FR, too. Thanks!
It was posted to one person because that person has made a habit of saying that everyone should homeschool, and I was wondering if he/ she thinks it would be a good idea for this particular;ar couple. As I honestly said I am all in favor of homeschooling, so much so that I have offered a list to several of the more "rabid" advocates that they can take under their wing to prove how good it works in even less then ideal circumstances.
You need to be honest that home schooling is not the be all end all for every single person or situation.
NEVER POST PICTURES!
Just kidding. These people have some real problems making good decisions.
Speaking of good decisions, I just installed Rosetta Stone to teach my kids and myself Spanish. The smallest one (7) is on it right now and having a good time.
Hopefully, one or all of us will get good at the Spanish module and then add another language pack in a year or two.
So far, it is a really cool tool.
Maybe if those parents were homeschooled, this would have never happened.
