Sources: Predator drone was over Benghazi consulate during last hours of attack
Hotair ^

CBS News has been told that, hours after the attack began, an unmanned Predator drone was sent over the U.S. mission in Benghazi, and that the drone and other reconnaissance aircraft apparently observed the final hours of the protracted battle
But it was too late to help the Americans in Benghazi. The ambassador and three others were dead.
Retired CIA officer Gary Berntsen believes help could have come much sooner. He commanded CIA counter-terrorism missions targeting Osama bin Laden and led the team that responded after bombings of the U.S. Embassy in East Africa.
You find a way to make this happen, Berntsen says. There isnt a plan for every single engagement. Sometimes you have to be able to make adjustments. They made zero adjustments in this. They stood and they watched and our people died.

Benghazi: Obama and His Ilk Hung Chris Stevens and Others Out to Dry
Townhall.com ^ | October 21, 2012 | Doug Giles
Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 6:57:38 AM by Kaslin
This past Friday the State Department released internal docs showing that Chris Stevens, U.S. Ambassador to hells corridor in Libya, begged Obamas boys in D.C. to ramp up security in Benghazi. And, as we all know now, he got nothing from the State Department but was allowed to be tortured and murdered by democracy seekers from the Religion of Peace in the liberated nation of Libya.
As far as I am concerned, blood is dripping from Obamas golf-gloved campaign hands. Whatever do I mean, you ask? Well, according to James Rosens findings in the newly released damning papers, its crap like
· On September 11the day Stevens and three other Americans were killedthe ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled sensitive, in which he noted growing problems with security in Benghazi and growing frustration on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as too weak to keep the country secure.
· Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled sensitive, that he entitled The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya. Writing on August 8, the ambassador noted that in just a few months time, Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape The individual incidents have been organized, he added, a function of the security vacuum that a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes.
Islamist extremists are able to attack the Red Cross with relative impunity, Stevens cabled. What we have seen are not random crimes of opportunity, but rather targeted and discriminate attacks. His final comment on the two-page document was: Attackers are unlikely to be deterred until authorities are at least as capable.
· By September 4, Stevenss aides were reporting back to Washington on the strong revolutionary and Islamist sentiment in the city.
Scarcely more than two months had passed since Stevens had notified the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and other agencies about a recent increase in violent incidents, including attacks against western [sic] interests. Until the GOL [Government of Libya] is able to effectively deal with these key issues, Stevens wrote on June 25, the violence is likely to continue and worsen.
· After the U.S. consulate in Benghazi had been damaged by an improvised explosive device, earlier that month, Stevens had reported to his superiors that an Islamist group had claimed credit for the attack, and in so doing had described the attack as targeting the Christians supervising the management of the consulate.
Islamic extremism appears to be on the rise in eastern Libya, the ambassador wrote, adding the Al-Qaeda flag has been spotted several times flying over government buildings and training facilities
· In the days leading up to 9/11, warnings came even from people outside the State Department. A Libyan womens rights activist, Wafa Bugaighis, confided to the Americans in Benghazi in mid-August: For the first time since the revolution, I am scared.
From the 166 hellish pages we see a stack of warnings, via multiple cables sent to D.C. from Chriss own laptop about which diddly was doneand that being after prior bombings of the Red Cross and our own compound and an assassination attempt on the British ambassador. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. This is gross and inexcusable.
If what happened in Benghazi on 9/11 was not an act of terror, or an act of war, I dont know what is. Whats the Religion of Peace got to do to wake this administration the heck up? Destroy one of Obamas favorite golf courses?
Oh, BTW: Missing from the extensive documents is any mention of a YouTube video ticking these peaceful protestors off.
Someone please forward this over to Romneys campaign for talking points for Monday nights debate on National Security.

BENGHAZI: Documents show Stevens worried about security threats, al-Qaeda
The Daily Bret Blog ^ | Oct 19 , 2012 | JAMES ROSEN

Across 166 pages of internal State Department documents released today by a pair of Republican congressmen pressing the Obama administration for more answers on the Benghazi terrorist attack slain U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and the security officers assigned to protect him repeatedly sounded alarms to their superiors in Washington about the intensifying lawlessness and violence in Eastern Libya, where Stevens ultimately died.
On September 11 the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled sensitive, in which he noted growing problems with security in Benghazi and growing frustration on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as too weak to keep the country secure.
In the document, Stevens also cited a meeting he had held two days earlier with local militia commanders. These men boasted to Stevens of exercising control over the Libyan Armed Forces, and threatened that if the U.S.-backed candidate for prime minister were to prevail in Libyas internal political jockeying, they would not continue to guarantee security in Benghazi.
Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled sensitive, that he entitled The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya.

New details emerge of deadly attack on US Consulate in Libya (Obama warned of possible attacks)
fox news ^ | 10/21/2012 | By Greg Palkot

Nearly six weeks later, the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, that left Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead is still shrouded in mystery. A clearer outline of the attack, though, is emerging.
A credible witness tells Fox News that, prior to the attack, he heard a mob approaching the missions front gate, chanting blood-thirsty slogans, before they broke in. He said it was less like a demonstration and more like a warm-up to battle.
This could explain how others thought, including some I spoke with, that the attack started as a protest. In the crowd, we are told, were members of Islamist groups from Benghazi. They all deny responsibility for the attack.
One such figure, singled out in the past week, was one-time Brigade leader Ahmed Abu Khattalah. Both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal last Wednesday, citing Libyan officials, described him as a key suspect. They even suggested he was on the run.
I met with him openly last Friday. He admitted he was in the area of the mission the night of the attack (directing traffic) and inside the compound (assisting fellow brigade members). He denied any responsibility.

Bigger Than Watergate? Rep Issa Questions Obama’s Role in Benghazi
Big Peace ^ | 10/21/12 | AWR Hawkins

On Friday Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent a 10 page letter to President Obama asking him to clarify the role of the White House in the Benghazi attacks.
In the letter, Issa pointed pointed again to the refusals to increase security. He specifically cited a 16-man security that could have been sent in but was not, because Obama allegedly wanted to lessen the number of U.S. security personnel in country in order to “normalize relations” in Libya.
Democrats are disputing this claim, because they know it will do Obama in politically if it can be proven.
Yet Issa is asking Obama to explain this very point
[The American people] deserve a complete explanation about your administration’s decision to accelerate a normalized presence in Libya at what now appears to be at the cost of endangering lives. These critical foreign policy decisions are not made by low or mid-level career officials — they are typically made through a structured and well-reasoned process that includes the National Security Council at the White House.

Portman: Iran story looks like another national security leak from the White House
Townhall.com ^ | October 21, 2012 | ERIKA JOHNSON
Posted on Sunday, October 21, 2012 4:13:14 PM by Kaslin
It was only a few months back that there was plenty of hearty suspicion going around concerning the White Houses involvement in a specific string of high-profile national-security leaks to the media, and on MSNBCs Meet the Press this morning, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman suggested something of the same vein in regards to yesterdays report on possible negotiations between Iran and the United States, via the NJ:
Portman, R-Ohio, said that the fact both countries are denying the story makes it look like another inappropriate leak from the administration rather than a diplomatic breakthrough.
It looks like another national security leak from the White House, he said on NBCs Meet The Press. Theyve done a lot of that.
Portman added that one-on-one negotiations would also be unwise because it would cast aside countries like France, which have helped marshal sanctions.
The last thing we want is to abandon our allies on this, he said.
I point to Portmans response because hes the man whos been tasked with trying to get inside President Obamas head as Mitt Romneys debate-practice sparring partner, and since hes been so heavily involved in the preparation process, this could be a good hint for the tack that Romney will take in Mondays third and final presidential debate on all things foreign-policy related.
Team Romney has been highly critical of both President Obamas leak-riddled administration and his handling of the United States relationships with Israel and Iran, and itll certainly be one of the front-seat issues in the debate. If this is really something that the administration floated to help bolster the presidents foreign-policy creds just before the debate and perhaps something that the president could even bring up himself as a positive during the debate, Id wager that Romney wont let it be too easy for him.

Rep. Rogers calls latest Libya intel disclosures orchestrated defense of administration
FoxNews.com ^ | 10/21/2012

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said over the weekend that recent disclosures by intelligence officials that once again revise the narrative on what happened during the deadly attack last month in Libya suggest an orchestrated defense of the administration.
The Michigan Republican congressman did not specify what disclosures he was talking about, but was likely referring to recent news articles downplaying the role of Al Qaeda in the Sept. 11 strike, as well as comments by intelligence officials claiming once again that protests elsewhere over an anti-Islam film may have played a role in inspiring the attack.
“It appears from a spate of articles that there is an orchestrated defense of the administration underway with selective disclosures of (intelligence community) products to support what policy-makers have said publicly, Rogers said in a statement.

Report: Islamist radicals find warm welcome in Obama White House
Daily Caller ^ | October 22, 2012 | Neil Munro
Posted on Monday, October 22, 2012 1:26:35 AM by Cincinatus’ Wife
White House visitor records show that administration officials have hosted numerous White House meetings with a series of U.S.-based Muslim political groups that have close ties to jihadi groups and push to reduce anti-terrorism investigations.
The visits were discovered by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, which compared the Obama White Houses visitor records with its database of Islamist advocacy groups.
For example, the records show that officials from the Council on American Islamic Relations have visited the White House 20 times, according to the organizations report.
Members of CAIR were invited to the White House, even though an April 2009 FBI statement said the bureau does not view CAIR as an appropriate liaison partner because of its ties to the Hamas jihadi group.
Read the White House Visitor Logs
Administration officials also invited Syrian-born Louay Safi to the White House twice in 2011, even though he had been named an unindicted co-conspirator in two terrorism cases, and had been barred from Fort Hood following the 2009 jihadi attack by a Muslim U.S. Army major.
In contrast, White House officials have not invited Zuhdi Jasser, an Arizona-based, American-born moderate Muslim and former Navy officer.
Weve never been invited and nether have any of [the 24 leaders in] our American Islamic Leadership Coalition, Jasser told The Daily Caller.
The absence of invitations to real Muslim moderates allows White House officials to pretend that members of the well-funded, U.S.-based radical group are moderates, even when theyre linked to the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood, he said.
Jassers nonpartisan coalition includes left-wing and feminist Muslims who are frequently criticized by the groups invited to the White House, he said.
The White House has selectively omitted genuine [Muslim] moderates and instead has picked radical Muslims to meet, said a statement from Steve Emerson, founder of the Investigative Project on Terrorism.
The closed-door White House meetings legitimize the radicals, but do not bring them into the mainstream, Emerson told TheDC.
The American public has a right to know why the White House is meeting with Hamas front groups, he added.
The visitor logs show that many of the Muslim advocates met with coalition-building officials in the White House, rather than with national security officials. The officials they met with include Paul Monteiro, the associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, and Amanda Brown, assistant to the then-White House director of political affairs Patrick Gaspard.
Gaspard is now the executive director of the Democratic National Committee.
The White Houses Secret Service guards do not veto invites from White House officials, but merely tell the officials if the guests will be arrested on existing charges if they arrive at the gates.
The meetings were likely intended to boost the presidents nationwide effort to bind often-rivaling constituency groups into the Democratic Partys diversity coalition.
That disparate coalition already includes groups claiming to represent environmentalists, blue-collar workers, immigrants, African-Americans, Hispanics, gun-control advocates, Jews, gays, tort lawyers and many others.
In April, White House officials invited members of the National Network for Arab American Communities to a White House meeting.
Our issues are American issues that affect our entire nation and we will ensure that our communitys voice is at the forefront of public debates around healthcare, immigration and national security reform, Linda Sarsour, NNAACs national advocacy director, said in an April press release.
Sarsour has been a White House visitor on seven different occasions. Her network includes 23 separate member associations, including the Illinois-based Arab American Action Network.
That groups director, Hatem Abudayyeh, has been under criminal investigation at least since late 2010, when FBI agents raided his home as part of an investigation into terror-related financing.
Abudayyeh visited the White House in April 2010, according to the Investigative Project on Terrorisms study.
Muslim voters likely comprise less than one percent of the nations electorate. Many are in blue states, including California and Illinois, but a significant number of Muslims have settled in Michigan and Virginia, where every vote could potentially sway a close election.
Overall, 75 percent of Muslim Arab Americans support Obama, while 8 percent support Gov. Mitt Romney, according to a poll of 400 Arab Americans taken in September by the Arab American Institute.
In turn, Christian Arabs strongly favor Romney by 16 percentage points, reducing Obamas overall support among Arab Americans to 52 percent, according to the poll.
In 2008, Obama won 67 percent of the Arab-American vote.
James Zogby, the Arab-American founder of the AAI, estimates there are a combined 833,000 Arab-American voters in Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.
The White Houses Muslim constituency group meetings are supplemented by additional meetings outside the White House.
In June, George Selim, the White Houses director for community partnerships, told TheDC that there is [sic] hundreds of examples of departments and agencies that meet with CAIR on a range of issues.
Selims office was formed in January to ensure cooperation by law enforcement and social service agencies with Muslim identity groups in the United States.
The CAIR meetings were arranged even though CAIR has extensive ties to jihad groups, including Hamas the Palestinian affiliate of the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood.
Top officials, including President Barack Obama, have participated in the Muslim outreach.
Obama has chosen to meet personally with leaders of several Muslim groups, including the Islamic Society of North America and the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
That groups co-founder, Iraqi-born Salem al-Marayati, visited the White House six times. He has denounced several successful convictions of jihadi terrorists, and has repeatedly called for Muslims to stop cooperation with the FBI except when it is mediated by MPAC or other Muslim groups.
The Islamic Society of North America was declared an unindicted co-conspirator in a successful 2008 trial of a Texas-based Muslim group that smuggled funds to Hamas. In October 2011, Mohamed Magid, the Sudanese-born president of ISNA, told top Justice Department officials that teaching people that all Muslims are a threat to the country is against the law and the Constitution.
Some of Obamas deputies, especially Valerie Jarrett and Tom Perez, who runs the civil-rights section in the Justice Department, have also been enthusiastic supporters of the outreach policy.
Jarrett spoke at ISNAs 2009 conference, and Perez spoke at its 2012 event.
TheDC emailed or called the White House, MPAC, CAIR, Safi, Sarsours press secretary and Abudayyeh for comment. None responded.
Any outreach to Islamic groups carries a political risk for American politicians because many Arab groups are infused with the bitter ethnic and religious politics in their foreign homelands.
The most important of those conflicts is the resentment among many Muslim Arabs over the remarkable successes of the small Jewish-majority state of Israel.
War and occupation in our home countries leads to political and legislative attacks on us here we must advocate and organize within our community to affect change, says an Arab language speaker on the Arab American Action Networks website.
Also, many of the Muslim-advocacy groups are led by religious zealots, ensuring a conflict with social-liberal groups in the diversity coalition. For example, in June 2010, Monteiro met with Muzzamil Siddiqi, the former head of the Islamic Society of North America, even though Siddiqi had declared in 2001 that that he supported laws in countries where homosexuality is punishable by death.
Numerous Democratic and Republican politicians have already grappled with this problem.
In August 2007, then-Democratic governor of Virginia Tim Kaine appointed a Muslim immigrant Esam Omeish to a Virginia panel on immigration. He rapidly rescinded the appointment after learning of Omeishs vocal support of jihad, the name given to war waged for Islam, during a radio talk-show.
Omeish was one of the top officials at a radical-linked mosque in Falls Church, Va., that hired Anwar al-Aulaqi as its imam prior to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America. Aulaqi subsequently fled and was later tied to numerous jihadi attacks, including the 9/11 and Fort Hood attacks.
President Obama approved a drone strike in Yemen that killed Aulaqi in September 2011.
Omeish has been welcomed to Obamas White House three times.
In 2006, Californias Sen. Barbara Boxer revoked a routine certificate of achievement award to a Californian employee of CAIR after a conservative blogger brought to light inflammatory statements made by the awardee. When a mistake has been made, the record has to be set straight, Boxers office announced.
CAIR officials have visited Obamas White House twenty times.
But CAIRs regional offices includes some exceptional people, said Brian Levin, director for the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State University, San Bernardino.
However, he added, I personally will not sit at any event where CAIR is participating [because] their national leadership has been involved in things so that Id rather abstain from even appearing to endorse.
MPACs leadership has evolved and improved, Levin argued. MPACs al-Marayati is not a bad guy theres a difference between him and CAIR, by a long-shot, he added.
Republicans have also misjudged some of these radical Muslim groups.
Before and shortly after the 9/11 jihad attack, President George W. Bush met with jihad-linked immigrants, including CAIR co-founder Nihad Awad and Abdurrahman Alamoudi, a leader in several American Islamist groups.
In 2001, Bushs administration invited Alamoudi to speak at the national prayer service for the jihadis 9/11 victims. In 2004, Alamoudi was sentenced to 23 years in prison for plotting to kill a top Saudi government leader.
Bushs deputies learned their lesson and later scrubbed invitations to jihad-linked advocates.
Regardless of ethnicity or nationality, said Levin, politicians really have to be carefully watching who you associate with, because many times theyre antithetical to the general goals you champion.

First, Aid the Living

A U.S. ambassador is missing and his diplomatic team is desperately fighting off terrorist attacks. Our commander-in-chief and his national-security team in Washington are listening to the phone calls from the Americans under attack and watching real-time video from a drone circling overhead. Yet the U.S. military sends no aid. Why?
On September 11, at about 10 p.m. Libyan time (4 p.m. Washington), Ambassador Chris Stevens and a small staff were inside our consulate in Benghazi when terrorists attacked. The consulate staff immediately contacted Washington and our embassy in Tripoli. The White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, and numerous military headquarters monitored the entire battle in real time via the phone calls from Benghazi and video from a drone overhead.
Our diplomats fought for seven hours without any aid from outside the country. Four Americans died while the Obama national-security team and our military passively watched and listened. The administration is being criticized for ignoring security needs before the attack and for falsely attributing the assault to a mob. But the most severe failure has gone unnoticed: namely, a failure to aid the living.
By 4:30 p.m. Washington time, the main consulate building was on fire and Ambassador Stevens was missing. In response, the embassy in Tripoli launched an aircraft carrying 22 men. Benghazi was 400 miles away.
At 5 p.m., President Obama met with Vice President Biden and Secretary of Defense Panetta in the Oval Office. The U.S. military base in Sigonella, Sicily, was 480 miles away from Benghazi. Stationed at Sigonella were Special Operations Forces, transport aircraft, and attack aircraft a much more formidable force than 22 men from the embassy.
In the past, presidents had taken immediate actions to protect Americans. In 1984, President Reagan had ordered U.S. pilots to force an airliner carrying terrorists

Iranian Regime: Obama Sent Secret Message Recognizing Our Nuclear Rights
Human Events ^ | 10/21/12 | Jim Hoft
Posted on Monday, October 22, 2012 8:10:35 AM by Josephat
Last week, Reza Kahlili, a former Revolutionary Guard member wrote that Iran had reached a deal with the Obama Administration to preserve portions of its nuclear program.
Hossain Ebrahimi told reporters yesterday that Obama sent the regime a secret message.
On Saturday, the Iranian regime confirmed this report. The Iranian regime revealed on Saturday that the Obama Administration sent them a secret message through the Swiss Embassy recognizing their nuclear rights. The Swiss government, acting through its Embassy in Tehran, serves as protecting power for U.S. interests in Iran. Fars News reported, via Weasel Zippers:
Senior Iranian parliamentary sources revealed on Saturday that the Swiss envoy to Tehran has quoted US President Barack Obama as acknowledging Irans nuclear rights.
Swiss Ambassador to Tehran Livia Leu Agosti attended a meeting with senior Iranian foreign ministry officials a few days ago to submit a letter from the US president to Tehran leaders.
Vice-Chairman of the Iranian Parliaments National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Hossein Ebrahimi told FNA that during the meeting, Agosti had told the Iranian officials that President Barack Obama recognizes Irans right of access and use of the nuclear technology.
There are a couple of points with regard to this (US) message (to Iran), Ebrahimi said and added, Firstly, during the session to submit the message, the Swiss ambassador to Tehran quoted the US president as saying that we (the US) recognize your nuclear rights.
As regards the second issue, the lawmaker said that the Swiss diplomat had also quoted Obama as saying that I didnt want to impose sanctions on your central bank but I had no options but to approve it since a Congress majority had approved the decision.
Irans Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said on Sunday that Iran has received a US message regarding the Strait of Hormoz via three different channels.
The US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice had handed a letter to Irans Ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazayee; the Swiss Ambassador to Tehran (Livia Leu Agosti) also conveyed the same thing; and Iraqi President Jalal Talabani delivered the same message to Iranian officials, he said last Sunday.
The US letter follows threats by Iran last month to shut off the Strait of Hormoz the worlds most important oil shipping lane if new US and EU sanctions over its nuclear program halted Iranian oil exports.

CBS News: Why didnt we send the military to rescue Benghazi personnel?

video at link...y now weve gotten the basic details of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi no thanks to the White House, which tried to pass it off as a spontaneous demonstration that spun out of contro for more than a week after the attack. Not too many people may have understood that the attack lasted for seven hours, however and that American military assets were in easy reach. The last two Americans who died had managed to survive six hours into the attack.
CBS News Sharyl Attkisson asked the obvious question yesterday: If we could fly an unarmed drone over the consulate while it was under attack, why didnt we send the military in to rescue our people?
